《shí jiǔ The Tao And Its Characteristics Chapter 1》
shīrén: lǎo zǐ Lao-Tzu

　　jué shèng qì zhì， mín lì bǎi bèi；
　　 jué rén qì yì， mín fù xiào cí；
　　 jué qiǎo qì lì， dào zéi wú yòu。
　　
　　 cǐ sān zhě yǐ wéi wén bù zú， gù lìng yòu suǒ shǔ：
　　 jiàn sù bào pǔ， shǎo sī guǎ yù。


　　If we could renounce our sageness and discard our wisdom,
　　it would be better for the people a hundredfold.
　　If we could renounce our benevolence and discard our righteousness,
　　the people would again become filial and kindly.
　　If we could renounce our artful contrivances and discard our (scheming for) gain,
　　there would be no thieves nor robbers.
　　
　　Those three methods (of government)
　　Thought olden ways in elegance did fail
　　And made these names their want of worth to veil;
　　But simple views, and courses plain and true
　　Would selfish ends and many lusts eschew.
shí fēn zhī jiǔ Nine-tenths
　　shí fēn zhī jiǔ。 wèi jué dà duō shù。《 zhuāng zǐ · yù yán》： “ yù yán shí jiǔ ， zhòng yán shí qī， zhī yán rì chū， hé yǐ tiān ní。 ” táng hán yù《 píng huái xī bēi wén》：“ fán cài zú sān wàn wǔ qiān， qí bù lè wéi bīng， yuàn guī wéi nóng zhě shí jiǔ ， xī zòng zhī。” cáo jìng huá《 fēi huā jí · yì dāng nián， chuānzhuó xì shì qiě mò děng xián kàn！》：“ rú cǐ ‘ tǔ qì ’ de chuānzhuó， jiā zhī mǎn kǒu tǔ qiāng， shèn zhì wèn lù， shí jiǔ dū zāo dào bái yǎn。”
