to be cynical of something
Diogenes（第奧根尼）以桶居所，生活極端簡樸，被視為像狗一樣的生活，乃有Cynic（犬儒）之稱。犬儒學派反文明、反社會，對世俗生活冷諷熱嘲，因此英語中的Cynic有譏諷、挖苦、冷淡、嫉世之意。
一個人難以與人相處，近於乖僻，我們說：He is a cynical person，又常以副詞如bitterly或者deeply強調之。
示例：John is a bitterly cynical person。
作形容詞用的cynical，有譏嘲乖僻，漠不關心以及懷疑的意思。
例如：The people are cynical of everything that are promised them。
To be cynical of something常用以表示對某事懷疑，不相信（也許從而有冷淡、譏嘲的意思）。
示例：John was cynical about Jean's prospects of success。
