Diogenes(第奧根尼)以桶居所,生活極端簡樸,被視為像狗一樣的生活,乃有Cynic(犬儒)之稱。犬儒學派反文明、反社會,對世俗生活冷諷熱嘲,因此英語中的Cynic有譏諷、挖苦、冷淡、嫉世之意。
一個人難以與人相處,近於乖僻,我們說:He is a cynical person,又常以副詞如bitterly或者deeply強調之。
