在洛杉磯警察局兇殺組，有一老一少兩個潦倒的警探。警察喬是個快退休的人，曾經離過三次婚，還因此還欠下了一屁股的債，為了還清債務不得不幹些兼職，做做房地産生意。但這一切還是無法改變他的潦倒生活，債務就像雪球一樣越積越大，似乎無論怎麽拼命也沒有出頭之日。這些日子，喬為了躲避銀行追債，還不得不每晚睡在自己的小車裏，要不然的話，他這唯一值錢的資産也要被銀行拖走了。
夢想某天早上醒來能成為好萊塢明星的卡頓，是洛杉磯警局的年輕警官，剛剛入行不久的他，日子也比喬好不到哪裏去。卡頓是繼承父業穿上警服的，其實他本人非常不喜歡做警察。而且，當警察的微薄薪水也遠不夠花消，卡頓不得不像喬一樣幹起了兼職，在當警察之餘做起了瑜伽課老師，甚至還當臨時演員。
喬和卡頓就這樣過着單調無望的日子，直到一起連環兇案徹底打亂了他們無聊的生活，兩人成為了一對活寶般的烏竜搭檔。這件連環兇殺案，死者都是一支饒舌樂團的歌手，警局懷疑幕後策劃的兇手，極有可能就是這支樂團所在唱片公司的老闆薩坦，為了防止旗下歌手簽約別的公司而狠下殺手。喬和卡頓，為了找出薩坦兇殺的證據，打入唱片公司內部，但他們發現，原來這起簡單的兇殺案背後，有着遠比他們想象更強大的勢力和更復雜的陰謀…… |
