　　“知道我身體不成，總是‘難活’，連一點忙都不幫，草也是我鍘的，牛要生仔，也不 　　管……”她好像已經站起來，他怕她跑過來，便一溜下炕，往院子去。他心卻還在 　　賭氣的說：“牛，小牛都給你。” 　　半個月亮倒挂在那山頂上邊，照得院子有半邊亮。一隻狗躺在院當中，看見他便站起 　　來走過一邊去。他信腳又到牛欄邊，槽還剩下很多的草。牛躺在暗處，輕輕的噴着鼻 　　子，“媽的，為什麽還不生呢！”便焦急的想起明天的會。 　　他剛要離開牛欄的時候，一個人影橫過來，輕聲的問着：“你的牛生仔沒有？”這人 　　一手托着草筐，一手撐在牛欄的門上，擋住他出來的路。 　　“是你，侯桂英。”他嘎聲的說。心不覺的跳得快起來。 　　侯桂英是他間壁的青聯主任的妻子，丈夫十八歲，而二十三歲的她卻總不歡喜，她 　　曾提出過離婚。她是婦聯會的委員，現已被提為參議會的候選人。 　　這是第三次還是第四次，當他晚上起來喂牲口時，她也跟着來喂，而且總跟過來說 　　句話，即使白天見，她也總是眯着她那單眼皮的長眼笑。他討厭她，恨她，有時就恨不得 　　抓過來把她撕開把她壓碎。 　　月亮光落在剪的上，落在敞開的脖子上，牙齒輕輕的咬着嘴唇，她望着他。他也呆 　　立在那。 　　“你……” 　　他感到一個可怕的東西在自己身上生長出來，他幾乎要去做一件嚇人的事，他可以什 　　麽都不怕的。但忽然另一個東西壓住他，他截斷她說道： 　　“不行的，侯桂英，你快要做議員，咱們都是幹部，要受批評的。”於是推開她， 　　頭也不的，走進自己的窯去。老婆已經坐到炕上，好像還在流眼淚。 　　“唉！”他長長的抽一口氣，躺到炕上。 　　像經過一件大事的那麽有着應有的鎮靜。像想着別人的事件似的想着適的事。他 　　覺得很滿意。於是他喊他的老婆：“睡吧，牛還沒有養仔呢，怕要到明天。” 　　老婆看見他在說話，便停止哭泣。吹熄燈。 　　“這老伙食伙房終是不成的，好，就讓她燒燒飯吧。鬧離婚印象不好。” 　　然而院子的雞叫。老婆已脫衣服，躺在他側邊，她嘮叨的問着：“明天還要出去 　　麽？什麽開不完的會……” 　　“牛是又怕侍候不成……”但他已經沒有很多時間來想牛的事，他需要睡眠，他闔着 　　眼，努力去找瞌睡，卻見一些會場，一些群衆，而且聽到什麽“宣傳工作不夠羅，農村落 　　呀，婦女工作等於零……”等等的話。他一想到這裏，就免不煩躁，如何能把農村弄好 　　呢，這裏沒有做工作的人呀。他自己是個什麽呢，他什麽也不懂。他沒有住過學，不識字， 　　他連兒子都沒有一個，而現在他做鄉的指導員，他明天還要報告開會意義……。 　　“第一要揚民主才能抗戰勝利；第二，三三就是……” 　　窗戶紙在慢慢變白，間壁已經有人起身。而何華明卻剛剛沉入在半睡眠狀態中，黃瘦
