　　阳城古称濩泽，为尧舜夏冀州之域，商为畿内地。战国时迭属韩、魏。汉置县，治所在今县城西15公里的泽城村，属河东郡。东汉建武元年（25年），封邓鲤于泽，为侯国。三国魏黄初之年（220年）废侯国复县。北兴安二年（453年），县治由泽城迁往今县城。孝昌元年（525年），分濩泽为濩泽和西濩泽。唐武德元年（618年）濩泽为泽州治所，八年，徙治端氏。天宝元年（742年），改濩泽为阳城县。天佑二年（905年），复称濩泽。五代后唐同光元年（923年），复易名阳城。金升阳城为 州，元中统元年（1260年）， 州复为阳城县。明、清时属泽州和泽州府。民国3年(1914年)，属冀宁道。民国13年，直属山西省。民国32年7月，分为阳南，阳北两县；民国34年4月，合为阳城县。1958年10月，曾合沁水县为阳城县，1959年10月两县分置。
