　　官名。秦置，汉沿设，在御史大夫之下。受命御史中丞，接受公卿奏事，举劾非法；有时受命执行办案、镇压农民起义等任务，号为“绣衣直指”。宣帝曾召侍御史二人治书，后乃专设治书侍御史。侍御史分掌令曹、印曹、供曹、尉马曹、乘曹。魏、晋、南北朝时，曹数时有增减，但均不止五曹，治书侍御史也分掌各曹，与汉制不同。北朝魏、齐必对策高第者方能补御史官。唐侍御史属台院，殿中侍御史属殿院，、监察御史属监院，三者并列。侍御史掌纠兴举百官、入閤承诏、知推（推鞫）弹（弹举）公廨（知公廨事）、杂事（御史台中其他各事）等事，以知杂事最忙。宋、元及明初侍御史只设一二人，作为御史大夫、御史中丞的佐贰。
