　　水东镇位于南海之滨，是电白县政治、经济、文化中心和中心镇，总面积49.2平方公里，人口12万人，管辖12个居委会和5个村委会。 该镇东临水东港，南与省级旅游区——中国第一滩、虎头山接壤，西接茂名30万吨乙烯厂，距茂名市区约20公里，离广湛高速路不足10公里，325国道横贯其中，高水公路擦城而过，是通往粤西各地和琼、桂等大西南地区的主要门户，水陆交通十分便利。 近年来，该镇充分发挥县城镇和中心镇的区位优势，不断优化产业结构，形成了制衣、电器制造、化工、农副产品加工、乙烯产品加工、运输、房地产、饮食服务、商贸流通、水果种植等支柱产业，民营经济迅猛发展。

　　旅游资源
　　放鸡岛是粤西著名海岛，位于电白县水东镇东南14.5公里，海拔122米，面积1.9平方公里，是茂名最大的海岛。放鸡岛海水能见度可达8米，是一个美丽而神秘的潜水旅游圣地和钓鱼基地。放鸡岛岛景秀丽、石景多姿，沙滩、蚀洞、岩石、林木、阳光、海水俱全。岛的东北岸，俗称“鸡头”部，岩石耸立，气势雄奇。西北面，港湾缓缓的坡度，洁白的细沙，柔和的海浪，是难得的天然浴场。东南岸，集奇、雄、壮、阔于一体。
　　岛上海上游乐项目丰富多彩，包括摩托艇、香蕉船、飞鱼船、帆船、潜水、海钓等。现在放鸡岛已建成集旅游、观光、休闲、游乐于一体的生态岛、度假休闲岛，配套设施齐全，分布合理，别具一格。堪称南国海上的明珠。
