　　东河区位于内蒙古自治区西部，包头市区东南部。总面积85平方千米。总人口38万人（2006年）。全区辖11个街道、1个镇：和平街道、财神庙街道、西脑包街道、南门外街道、南圪洞街道、东站街道、回民街道、二里半街道、河东街道、铁西街道、东兴街道、河东镇。区人民政府驻河东街道。
　　年均温6.6℃，年降水量310毫米。京包、包兰、包白（云鄂博）、包石（拐）、包环铁路通达，110、210国道过境。纪念地有王若飞革命故址泰安客栈，古迹有“转龙藏”（召庙）和新石器文化遗址。
　　
　　历史沿革
　　
　　东河区是包头市老城区，历史上是中国西北地区的皮毛、粮食、药材集散地。1809年设镇，属萨拉齐厅，1873年筑城，1923年设包头设置局，1926年改县。1937年改包头（县级）市。1956年原包头市改为东河区。
　　
　　1997年，面积62.5平方千米，人口35.1万。辖12个街道：和平路街道、东站街道、财神庙街道、回民街道、南门外街道、西脑包街道、二里半街道、东兴街道、铁西街道、南圪洞街道、河东街道、杨圪塄街道。

概况
　　因东河流经区内而得名。包头市辖区之一。面积29．7平方公里。人口34．7万，蒙古族0．48万人，其他少数民族2万人。辖12个街道办事处。
历史沿革
　　东河区辖地基于旧包头城域。清代嘉庆十四年(公元1809年)，萨拉齐厅在此设镇。道光十六年(公元1836年)因商业兴盛，改设大行。辛亥革命后改名包东州。公元1923年平绥铁路延至包头通车，遂立包头设治局。1926年晋升为县。1932年成立包头市政筹备处，与县政府并存。1937年日军侵占包头，改县为特别市。1938年改为普通市。1946年恢复县、市并存分治体制。1950年包头市与包头县人民政府相继成立，包头市设一、二、三区(城郊)。1953年包头城区东北梁一带成立回民自治区。1956年一区、二区和回民自治区合并为东河区。
经济发展
　　四十多年的发展，这个历史上曾是商贾云集的皮毛集散地已发展成为一个地方工业较为集中的新型城区，自治区、市属企业153个，区属企业174个，产品达550种。交通发达。铁路包头东站、中国民航包头站、黄河航运公司、包头市长途汽车站都设在该区。
