　　概况
　　　市中区是鲁南经济带重要城市济宁市核心区，是市委、市政府所在地，全市政治、经济、文化中心。面积381平方公里，人口56万，辖6个街道、3个镇和1个省级经济开发区，285个村、社区。
　　历史沿革
　　　这里历史悠久，文化深厚。古运河、京杭大运河从区内流过，素有“中国运河之都”的美誉。区内古迹众多，周边名胜云集，区内太白楼、铁塔寺等久负盛名，唐代大诗人李白寓居于此23年，有“天下汉碑半济宁”之称。东临孔子故里曲阜，西靠水泊梁山，南接中国北方最大的淡水湖微山湖，北有佛都汶上。这里交通便利，通讯发达。多条铁路、高速公路在这里交汇，京杭大运河直达江浙，济宁机场已开通至北京、上海、广州的航线，济徐高速等多条道路工程同时开工建设。这里资源丰富，水土富饶。是国家级煤炭能源基地、生物技术产业基地、工程机械产业基地。安居家具、“喻屯甜瓜”等远销省内外。
　　市中区原为济宁地辖市，1983年经国务院批准撤市建区。2008年9月，市委、市政府对济宁市区行政区划进行了调整，将原来的行政区域同心圆城市结构调整为扇形放射式，形成“中心突破、扇形放射，城乡一体、联动发展”的新格局。近年来，市中区在济宁市委、市政府的正确领导下，以科学发展观为指导，坚持走彰显优势、富有特色的发展之路，围绕打造中国运河之都、建设富裕文明和谐优美新中区的奋斗目标，按照现代工业服务业强区、改革开放活区、文明和谐立区、与全市共荣兴区的总基调和打造都市型产业发达区、民生殷实首善区、生态宜居新中区的发展定位，大力实施项目带动、集群发展、品牌提升和人才强区战略，经济社会发展保持良好势头。
　　发展前景
　　都市型产业发展明显提速增效。坚持以都市型产业为方向，招商引资为牵动，项目建设为主线，服务业和都市型工业“双轮驱动”，大力发展总部经济、楼宇经济、街区经济和园区经济，现代服务业、新兴服务业和高新技术产业成长较快。金融保险、证券担保、高端酒店、品牌商贸、现代物流等产业加快聚集。形成以服务业为主导、都市型工业为支撑、城郊产业型生态农业为基础的产业结构。我区被确定为全省服务业发展重点城区，3个社区被确定为国家、省级社区商业示范社区。樱花五金集团发展成为亚洲最大的钉类五金生产基地。
　　城乡建设全面加快。近年来，市委、市政府作出突破中心城区、做大做美中心城市的战略决策，实施了一大批重点城建项目和基础设施工程，大力度拉开新济宁建设框架。我们把全面融入新济宁建设作为跨越发展的重大机遇，按照“孔孟之乡、运河之都、水城风貌、生态宜居”的城市定位，在城市规划、建设、管理、服务中全面提升作为。完成了引水入城、道路修建、桥梁建设、园林改造等一批重点工程，大力推进旧城开发和“城中村”改造，全面实施运河核心景区改造建设工程，城市面貌发生新的改观。坚持城市建设与产业发展融合互动，着力打造运河城财富广场、太白路综合商业街等重大产业载体。高起点规划建设省级经济开发区和滨河新区，推进新型乡镇、新型农村社区建设，加快城乡一体化进程。全面开展创建省级文明城市活动，持续开展以“净化、绿化、亮化和道路硬化”为内容的宜居社区四项工程和“城乡清洁行动”、城乡环境综合整治集中会战活动。
　　民生保障不断加强。实施以发展成果共享机制、困难群众救助机制、群众生活保障机制为内容的民生工程，坚持每年实施一批实事项目。推行失地群众、困难群众就业援助计划和大学生就业扶助计划，建立失地群众基本生活保障制度，大力开展义务教育“两免一补”和困难学生救助，实施城区居民基本医疗保险和新型农村合作医疗制度，有效解决了群众就业、养老、医疗、教育、居住等方面的实际困难。加快改造城市社区和农村农业基础设施，深入开展“邻居节”等文明创建活动，社会文明程度不断提升。大力推进平安中区建设，促进了社会安全、稳定、和谐。我区先后被授予全国科技进步先进区、计划生育优质服务先进区、首批社区建设示范区和全省义务教育工作先进区、社会文化先进区、精神文明建设先进区、平安建设先进区等荣誉称号。

　　市中区辖8个街道：南苑街道、古槐街道、济阳街道、阜桥街道、越河街道、仙营街道、观音阁街道、金城街道。
历史沿革
　　1994年3月3日，撤销仙营乡、观音阁乡、土城乡、南辛庄乡，设立仙营镇、观音阁镇、金城镇、南苑镇。区划调整后，市中区辖：阜桥街道、古槐街道、济阳街道、越河街道、仙营镇、观音阁镇、南苑镇、金城镇。

　　2000年12月1日，山东省政府（鲁政函民字63号）批准同意：撤销仙营镇，以原仙营镇的行政区域设立仙营街道办事处，办事处机关驻原仙营镇人民政府驻地；撤销金城镇，以原金城镇的行政区域设立金城街道办事处，办事处机关驻原金城镇人民政府驻地；撤销观音阁镇，以原观音阁镇的行政区域设立观音阁街道办事处，办事处机关驻原观音阁镇人民政府驻地；撤销南苑镇，以原南苑镇的行政区域设立南苑街道办事处，办事处机关驻原南苑镇人民政府驻地。
　　截至2002年12月31日，市中区辖8个街道：阜桥街道、古槐街道、济阳街道、越河街道、仙营街道、观音阁街道、南苑街道、金城街道。
