Responsibilities:

•Hostel Services provides shelter, counselling, and support programs to homeless individuals and families with children. Hostels serves over 5000 homeless individuals yearly in a shelter setting. Our staffs are professional and committed employees who value innovation, customer service and client engagement.
•As a Client Service Worker you will be responsible for addressing client needs in a client focused, holistic fashion as a member of the Shelter team. The primary functions associated with this position include but are not limited to:
•Handles inquiries, in person or on the telephone, from members of the public requesting emergency accommodation or requesting general program information
•Determines eligibility for admittance and/or provides clear information regarding admittance to hostel services or makes appropriate referrals to agencies based on determination of client need
•Admits clients, performs initial screening and assesses eligibility/necessity for emergency accommodation
•Welcomes clients into program by describing the policies, rules and philosophy of the program
•Provides residents with a tour of the program, explains fire and safety procedures and answers questions
•Ensures safety and well being of clients that includes regular walk abouts through the building and being available to clients
•Assists clients in integrating into the hostel environment
•Assesses and assists with client's personal needs e.g. hygiene, medical, emotional and ensures client's needs are addressed appropriately
•Assists in crisis management within the facility when necessary
•De-escalates conflicts between clients or between clients and staff utilizing problem solving and crisis intervention techniques and completes hostel incident reports
•Confers with clients e.g. health concerns, difficulties, etc. referring to appropriate personnel/outside agencies
•Engages in active listening and problem solving around client's difficulties and/or recommends appropriate resources to address client needs
•Contributes to the development of a case plan for residents and participates in case conferences with the Counsellor
•Ensures effective service delivery to the resident by documenting information/observations/impressions which may impact on a client's case plan
•Participates in program development and delivery (e.g. recreation, educational, social/life skills)
•Liaisons with other staff within the program and with community agencies (e.g. hospitals, social workers, doctors, courts, and other City department/divisions, shelters) to provide program information or in advocating for transfers/placement of residents
•Records admittance and discharge information as well as other information necessary for the determination of eligibility for financial assistance
•Monitors facilities, client common areas and conducts bed/room checks
•Completes and maintains documentation relevant to client and shift related events (i.e. shift log, incident reports, admission files, etc.)
•Undertakes training, attends staff/committee meetings,and performs other duties as required
Qualifications:

•Considerable experience in directly assisting persons with psycho/social/physical, educational, emotional and/or environmental problems in a hostel or similar setting
•Considerable experience addressing the needs of homeless clients or clients at risk of homelessness including making referrals to community agencies
•Degree or Diploma in Social Services or related field or equivalent combination of education and/or experience
•Demonstrated ability to assist in program development
•Advanced knowledge of issues relating to homelessness
•Knowledge of applicable legislation regulation assistance and services
•Proficiency working in an automated environment with excellent computer skills (MS Office 2007)
•Ability to appropriately assess situations based on available information and past experience
•Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, staff, community agencies and the public
•Ability to prepare and write reports/records and maintain same
•Ability to effectively perform job duties with minimal supervision
•Ability to de-escalate interpersonal conflicts in an effective fashion through crisis intervention techniques
•Demonstrated problem solving ability
•Ability to work shifts in a 24 hour a day operation including days, evenings, overnights, weekends and holidays on a scheduled and call-in basis
This is a part-time position.
