Shi Zhi

Believe in the Future

When spider has ruthlessly sealed up my stove,
the smoke from the ashes sadly sighs for poverty,
I still stubbornly unfold the hopeless ashes
and write with the beautiful snowflakes: Believe in the future.

When my purple grapes have dissolved into dewdrops in late autumn
and the flower of mine snuggles up in other’s arms of love,
I still stubbornly write on the desolate land
with the frost-bitten withered vine: Believe in the future.

I will point, with my fingers, to the waves surging on the horizon,
I will hold the sea of the sun up in my palms.
With that beautiful and warm pen twinkling dawn,
in a childish handwriting I will write: Believe in the future.

The reason why I believe in the future
is that I believe that the eyes of the future people—
She has eyes that can dispel the clouds of history,
She has pupils that can see clear the years.

No matter people are moved to tears and show sympathy for
or sneer at and give a disdainful look
at our rotten skin and flesh,
those doubts and pains after failure,

I believe that people will surly objectively appraise
our back bones, the countless explorations,
failures and successes we have experienced.
Well, I expect anxiously to be judged by them.

Oh, my friend, do believe in the future.
Believe and make great efforts.
Believe that you can defeat death with your youth.
Believe in the future and love life.
