Taking an Air Canada Flight to San Francisco
By Hepingdao
Let us play a game of hidden chess:
Qin bricks against Han tiles,
Willows against Qiang flutes,
Bright moon against mountain passes,
Stars against the sun.
It has been so long since I encountered a battlefield so vast.
At an altitude of thirty thousand feet,
We wage a fierce battle of three hundred rounds,
Rapidly pushing the border toward the south.
As we conclude this chess match
That turns heaven and earth upside down,
Frenzied gold rushers
Are leaving the old golden capital, San Francisco,
Trudging all the way north Along the West Coast line,
Defying day and night,
Bound for the new gold-mining town:
Dawson City.
Most of them
Ended up as laborers building the Pacific Railway.
Tracing the footprints they left behind,
Route 101 was built—
A landscape of dreams,
The Chu-Han dividing line.
The destination of this flight
Is San Francisco’s Chinatown:
A pot of aged tea,
And two tons of dawn.
I took only a small sip.
The rest,
I poured into the San Francisco Bay.
