Tse-tsis-ten
S'Klallam
Dungeness crab,
Dungeness Spit
By He Ping Dao
Dungeness,
I exile you.
The Valley, the River, the Town,
please cooperate.
Together, for this name,
establish
the Landing County Park,
the National Wildlife Refuge.
Please unload
the twelve thousand cubic yards of silt, sand, and gravel
yielded each year
by the many glaciers of Mount Olympus.
Fashion the Bay, and with it,
the Sand Spit.
Please, upon the tip of its 5.5 miles of tongue, ignite the New Lighthouse.
Here is
the Tse-tsis-ten Delta,
the ancestral land of the S'Klallam people.
Across the strait,
the W̱SÁNEĆ people,
another spit
beheld from my window.
Far, far behind—
in the English Channel,
Dungeness Point’s
lonely shadow, look.
At a speed of fifteen feet per year,
the spit stretches its torso into the blue ocean.
So like a swan metamorphosing into a Kunpeng,
longing to break free from the waves,
frightening a little gray crab
that stubbornly refuses to enter the trap.
Note:
Dungeness crab, usually grayish-brown in color.
