The Kinsol Trestle
By He Ping Dao
Spanning the Koksilah River,
A free-standing wooden frame in forty-four meters of void,
Shouldering rails of the nineteenth century.
Derived from the King Solomon Copper Mine,
The fingerprints of ore veins, and the rings of timber pillars,
Root together deep within
The bedrock of metamorphic gabbro and amphibolite.
Two super-engineering feats—
Mantle magma from two hundred million years ago,
Quenched in the high-pressure crust fifteen kilometers deep,
Then hoisted up by tectonic plates.
The Cordilleran Ice Sheet, turned excavator,
Split open this river ten thousand years ago.
The human chronicle belonging to Kinsol—
Ground broken in 1914,
Joined in 1920,
And finally, in the summer of 1979, abandoned to the shadows.
Not until the turn of this century, held in the palms of Friends of The Trestle,
Did it wake again.
Coinciding with the Victoria Day long weekend,
Hikers, families, and herds of bicycles
Pass through in a steady stream.
Below the bridge, between the grim ribs of dark green rock,
A shooting star flower gazes in the wind.
Abruptly, the wings of a bald eagle
Rip through the silence of the canyon—
A violent squall of hail,
Deciphering the code of the ancient ice sheet,
Like a sky full of shooting stars,
Comes crashing down.
