Malmö
I wonder
If the Western Harbor and the Old Town
Are but two parallel universes
Within Einstein's relativity.
I stand as an observer
As Calatrava,
With that cunning ninety-degree twist,
Turns the Turning Torso
Into the finest diamond drill bit
For the azure sky.
Möllevången
Is but a palette
Of saffron, falafel, and pizza,
And spices gathered from across the globe.
I,
Imitating a musical note,
Drift past
The Castle Mill,
The floral abundance of Slottsträdgården,
The Fountain of Anna-Lisa,
And the blossom-lined street of Kronprinsessan Blomster.
As I slip into
Pildammsparken,
Where concentric circles of beech trees rear up
Two towering walls of green,
Sandwiching the sky.
My dear,
Malmö
Is a kaleidoscope;
Multiculturalism was never as simple as a melting pot.
Tomorrow,
I shall pass through
The Öresund Bridge,
And along with the undersea tunnel,
Vanish into the belly of the Baltic Sea.
Like the apple in Newton’s hand
Falling back to its home star;
Like a cutthroat trout
Returning year after year
To North Saanich,
To Hagan Creek.
