Tiveden National Park
By He Ping Dao (Peace Island)
Where the sunlight reaches
The Pleistocene ice sheet receded
Leaving behind a chaotic wake of wreckage——
Roche moutonnée, muskox horns, moraines, and erratic blocks.
You will wander
Through deep fissures and narrow gaps
Torn and abraded into the ancient granite basement.
This uncarved beauty, from an aesthetic gaze,
Is often wrapped by ancient pines and thick mosses of the forest.
An occasional exposed blade
Drips with spring water, rust,
And hematite red;
In the afternoon air, there mingles
The earthy scent of damp moss
And the crisp fragrance of pine resin.
But once night falls,
When the moon is like a ship’s lantern swaying in the cold wind
On the verge of flickering out,
Amidst the haze,
The sea of boulders evolves
Into a daunting
And gloomy forest.
The shrill cry of the night owl
And the wolf’s howl piercing through eighteen hundred million years of rock;
Outlaws wandering the world,
And the stone trolls of folklore.
The tiny tent, pressed beneath the gravity-shadow of giant rocks,
Faces
Lake Metesjön,
This deep, dark moraine lake——
No matter how you look, it resembles
The foot of a giant troll
Trapped in a snare of Precambrian granite.
I turn onto my side:
A tiny pixel in a black ocean.
The solitary star.
