T-Bana
Stockholm
By He Ping Dao (和平岛)
The King of the Baltic Sea
Treasured thirty thousand gemstones.
He chose the fourteen largest and most precious,
Shining like celestial bodies,
As a gift for his beloved Queen of Lake Mälaren.
The radiant Queen
Set them into a crown
To coronate the fruit of their love,
The prince held so dearly upon her knee:
Stockholm.
————The most compelling evidence
Of this legendary city’s birth
Comes from the isotopic dating of the earth.
The tunnels of the T-Bana
Lead back to the Stockholm Granite, eighteen billion years old.
Within the Golden Hall, ten million mosaics
Are the raw materials exhumed from those depths,
Smelted furnace by furnace by Italian masters,
Hammered into
Fragments of gold and colored glass.
Then there are the eight million red bricks,
And the countless slabs of hand-cut stone,
The very flesh and bone
Of palaces, castles, cathedrals,
streets and alleys.
A resplendent Stockholm,
Under the mantle of the King and Queen,
An unsinkable
Venice of the North.
Beneath the ancient stars,
The crown of Scandinavia
Radiates the splendor of the Aurora.
And the Nobel Prize money?
It is but a mere fraction of the treasure.
