The Vasa
By He Ping Dao (和平岛)
I marvel at the seventeenth century—
The grandest, most formidable, most ornate warship of its time,
Preserved by the brackish, low-oxygen depths of the Baltic Sea.
Saved alongside it:
Leather shoes, spoons,
The skeletal remains of a sailor named "Bebe,"
And a woman nicknamed "Gertrude."
It took only a sudden gust
To drive the brine into the lower gun ports,
Choking the strength and ambition of Sweden.
A tragedy
Older and more bitter than the Titanic,
Continues to live
Exactly as it was.
Its breath
Sealed within a capsule of pitch.
My pen’s tip
Is no oxygen tube.
Is silence the greatest mercy?
I cannot write a wordless poem.
These square Chinese characters
Have jagged edges, unable to exhale.
