Centaurea nigra
Uppsala
By He Ping Dao (和平岛)
Closing the Book of Geology,
Opening the Book of Civilization,
I arrive in Uppsala: Sweden’s spiritual and intellectual core.
From Gamla Uppsala: The Mound of Time,
To the pink Uppsala Castle and the red-brick Cathedral.
It convinces me: that pink granite—
Though crushed, decomposed, and reshaped by crust and glacier—
Can return as the clay of the Mälaren Valley,
Re-bonded and fired into
The fossilized refinement
Of State and Church.
Viking pyres,
Pyramids of man-made igneous rock;
In the marginalia, I read————
A single Cornflower in black armor,
The binary nomenclature: Centaurea nigra.
You, sir, were a born poet,
Just as I was meant to be a grease-stained geologist.
The stone doors of the Cathedral
Softly click shut
Upon your Systema Naturae.
I bite into a massive strawberry;
The crimson juice of sunlight
Bursts through layers of cell membranes,
A thunderous explosion.
Scattered seeds—
The Cornflower————
The biodiversity superstar of Uppsala,
Classified as an invasive species
By the Invasive Species Council of British Columbia.
