Mount Wells Regional Park
By Hepingdao
A dragon
Lies in ambush
Within the profound depths of Humpback Reservoir.
To invite her out,
Along the winding trails,
The month of May
Offers up the most succulent flora
In selfless devotion.
What has taken me nearly thirty years to know by heart:
Blue Camas,
Sea Blush,
Pacific Bleeding Heart,
Orange Honeysuckle,
Broad-leaved Stonecrop,
Indian Paintbrush,
And Snow-in-Summer.
These are all the colors she adores,
Arranged all the way up to the summit.
At the edge of the cliff,
I find a few sprigs of Common Yarrow.
Just to lure a dragon—
Nature is truly giving its all.
Where there is a dragon, in summer, there is a guardian;
A mountain need not be high—
Once it has its own deity.
I promised her
A poem,
Just as I promised
Mount Wells
A white cloud.
The canyon
Is held in the embrace
Between her and Mount McDonald.
A falcon—
A hieroglyph of pure spirit—
Deep within the white clouds,
Flickers in and out.
The most ignored of all
Is the Scotch Broom;
Having survived countless culls,
Jestingly called the "Canadian Goldenrod"—
Perhaps the most deeply rooted immigrant of them all.
