Trekking Knutshøe
By He Ping Dao
Another dragon of stone
Gazing from afar at the Besseggen Ridge.
When it lulls to sleep,
Side-lying by Lake Nedre Leirungen,
One can hear its rhythmic snores
And the flow of its dreamy saliva.
Golden sunlight floods the peaks.
Even a Great Wall built of piled Han characters
Could not piece together a complete dragon.
The beauty of stone far transcends the poetic value
Offered by the traditional bounds
Of the feminine "she" and the masculine "he."
Exhausting every English digital code
To arrange a palette,
One still cannot paint
What even poetry fails to render:
The exotic scent of sandalwood
Wafting from dragon meat simmering in a cauldron.
Perhaps, only in Norwegian—
Peer Gynt, he does not ride that absurd reindeer.
Two snow-white rock goats,
Forlorn and seeking their master,
Crouch in the armpit of the stone dragon.
Large enough to swallow Lake Gjende whole,
While Lake Øvre Leirungen
Is its exposed navel.
Tread softly.
Within the Celestial Eye opened by the sounds of nature,
You reach in and pull out, unceasingly:
Pyroxene, quartz, emerald, turquoise—
These moons, left behind in the mortal world.
