Hiking the Besseggen Ridge
By Peace Island (He Ping Dao)
The Caledonian Orogeny
Ceased four hundred million years ago.
As you scramble up the Besseggen Ridge,
You hear the wind meeting Proterozoic crystalline rocks.
You cannot hear the gabbro, anorthosite, and granite; nor their children—
Pyroxene, plagioclase, and quartz crystals—
The sound of their birth from the Proterozoic magma-womb.
It is the sound of ancient angelic wings, brushing against the stars.
Wind meets the ridge.
A jade craftsman, borrowing ice chisels and sandpaper
From the Quaternary glaciers,
Polishes the ridge to look more like a ridge.
The remaining offcuts
Were cast into Lake Gjende and Lake Bessvatnet:
Splinters of emerald, turquoise, and beryl,
Mingling with deep-blue fallen stars.
Green and blue
Interplay within the dark lenses of Medusa's sunglasses.
Red
Within the veins
Petrifies, unchecked.
At last, I hear
The wind from the Proterozoic Eon—
An ice wine mixed from three primary colors, RGB, piercing the lungs—
So quiet, so quiet, that even the wind cannot be heard.
