Flåm
By Peace Island (He Ping Dao)
Girt by mountains on every side,
To enter or leave, one must pierce through ox-horn tunnels.
The solitary fjord,
Like a shell forced open by the octopus’s might.
The town of Flåm—
In the Norwegian tongue,
Is a Shangri-la of the Tibetan heights,
The Peach Blossom Spring from Tao Yuanming’s lines.
To be a little closer to Heaven,
We climbed to the foot of Brekkefossen
To pitch our camp.
Awakened by the rising sun,
Only then did we realize: we had missed
The angels' summons, the stars' silent sermon.
Visiting the Flåm Railway Museum,
Drifting on the Nærøyfjord cruise,
Looking down at the green-skinned train
As it glides along the river’s bend.
To carve a railway through to Heaven,
How many laborers must it take?
Perhaps, we have been on the train all along.
