The calculations of Nature,

Find no better vessel than such an hourglass—

The glacier, an isosceles triangle suspended from the blue,

is pouring out transparent sand;

The water-cube at the valley floor receives with precision,

stacking up a pyramid of time.

An oasis floating in the afternoon sun—

you will surely be struck with awe

at the Pharaoh and Cleopatra,

lurking within the shadows of the Nile.

An ivory-colored camping tent,

through the lens of Buddhist insight,

gazes at

the seven-story pagoda,

as if awakening from a daydream.

Just take a single sarira from within,

as a stepping stone,

and you shall see:

At either end of the hourglass,

the frenzied horns of a Spanish bull,

and a pair of lovers, sleeping foot to foot upon the grass.

Even if all the world’s jewels

from Cleopatra’s casket
