Dijon

Dijon: a shrunken specimen of Lyon.
Darcy Park is the Old Town’s
green safe-house.
A white marble bear
guards the entrance
to the labyrinth.
Along the spine—Rue de la Liberté—a "long-serpent" formation:
Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy,
The Museum of Fine Arts,
The Musée Rude,
Notre Dame,
Saint-Michel.
One stone building linked to the next,
One white-walled room nested in another,
A maze of interlocking traps,
A large intestine.
Designed by the hand of the Duke himself,
Across two generations of father and son;
Sarcophagi carved from marble
are pillows laid out in the museum.
The halls and cathedrals here
are forever free of charge;
You are welcome to play the part
of the pallbearer, the mourner,
or an actor in the choir.
Or, retreat to the shelter,
gnaw on rock-hard Burgundian black bread,
layered with chestnut-flavored cheese,
and take a sip of full-bodied
Burgundian Pinot Noir.
But you must remember
Dijon’s greatest specialty: Mustard.
Smear a thick, heavy layer
onto that black bread—
It has the subtle fragrance of stinky tofu,
mixed with the piercing sting of chili.
Only then is it possible
to escape the Duke’s curse.
