On Painting
By He Ping Dao
Canyons and hillsides
Sacred lands of wild, untamed growth.
Such fervent blooms,
Such lush azaleas—blanketing the ridges, flooding the fields.
The masters here are the cattle, the flocks,
The sheepdogs, wild goats, and marmots,
The birds, the butterflies, the bees...
What oil painting
Could be more lifelike than these blossoms?
What landscape scroll
Could be more evocative than this scenery?
Here lie all the pigments of your dreams:
Violet, cloisonné blue...
These rich and varied hues,
Unearthed from the metallic ores of the mountain’s bedrock,
Blend naturally with the environment—
Ample for any artist
To extract with grand exaggeration.
Van Gogh’s sunflowers
Are a phantom fire burning upon the canvas,
But these azaleas
Are blood-warm plasma surging from the cracks of rocks.
That kind of near-pathological spectral distortion,
That oversaturated sensory payload,
Leads ultimately to neural failure
And mental collapse.
And so, here is the advertisement I represent—
If you seek a return to nature, come to Mont Blanc.
Pure, natural colors
Are the ultimate healing.
The original inhabitants here
Are waiting for you.

Geology
By He Ping Dao
I. The Raw Materials:
In Italy,
I saw the foliated layers of phyllite;
The sericite within holds a silken luster—
A low-grade metamorphic rock.
In Switzerland,
Black and purple shales, with thin interbeds of limestone—
Marine sedimentary rocks.
In France,
I encountered muscovite schist,
Those silver scales squeezed out from the Earth's crust—
A medium-grade metamorphic rock.
II. The Constructed Geological History:
Once, there was a vast ocean here named Tethys.
Between the Northern European plate and the Southern continental plate,
It moved in opposition—subducting, squeezing, colliding—
Achieving the famous Alpine Orogeny.
The oceanic plate vanished;
The Alps rose.
III. The Fictional Story:
Once upon a time, the great overlord, the Tethys Sea God,
Had a beautiful and lovely daughter:
Princess Blanc.
Coveted by the notorious pirates of the Mediterranean,
The Sea God fell in misfortune.
The Princess, vowing never to submit,
Was imprisoned within Mont Blanc,
Waiting for her Prince.
Until this day,
No rescue has ever come.
Only a "geology guy" arrives,
Restless and eager to act,
Yet sighing at the vanished ocean,
And sighing at the mountain.
All the prehistoric archives
Are hidden deep within the shale beds of Switzerland.
The silken luster of the sericite in Italy
Is the fading afterglow of the fallen Tethys sun.
And in France, those silver-glinting muscovite schists,
Under the crushing weight of continental plates,
Are the armors of the Blanc warriors—
A testament to the unyielding spirit of humanity.

Sculpture
By He Ping Dao
Whenever encountering strangely shaped peaks or odd stones,
They are dubbed:
"Boy Worshipping Guanyin," "Monkey Fishing for the Moon," "Pillar Propping the Sky."
Such pictographic labels,
Compared to the randomness of geological structures,
Seem far too impatient.
In the context of Alpine culture,
They feel somewhat out of place.
In Switzerland, along a mushroom-themed trail,
Wooden sculptures stand by the path:
Rabbits, bears, and other stout little creatures.
They seem as if
From the damp forest undergrowth,
Beneath the layers of resin and humus, from the depth of pungent scents,
They have suddenly leapt forth.
Around the houses, time and again, I see
Distinctively shaped woodcarvings,
Or small pebbles and cobbles—transported by glaciers—
Where one stoops down and picks them up by hand,
Placing them at will.
Many objects,
Small trinkets,
All infused with ingenious craftsmanship.
Hikers, residents, the mountains and waters—
Along the way, they move like this:
Infecting one another,
Sculpting
Each other's souls.
I do not seek to transform, overnight,
Into a master sculptor;
Nor do I deliberately
Chase the trends of fashion,
The halls of art,
Or the ivory tower.

The Taste of the Peaks (Le goût des cimes)
By He Ping Dao
Near La Pully in Switzerland,
I chanced upon a village gathering for the cows—
Les Bières du Grand-Saint-Bernard.
Its theme:
Le goût des cimes—The Taste of the Peaks.
And so, we ordered
Two glasses of beer,
Two servings of fondue aux pommes de terre.
The chef revealed his mastery:
Cheese melting,
Pouring into halved, boiled potatoes—
A special hospitality
For guests from afar.
The rising steam of molten cheese,
The crisp chill of the beer;
Down the throat,
Diving into the gut.
Deep within the heart of the flesh,
Two worlds of ice and fire,
The cosmic and the human locked in combat.
Heaven vanishes.
Man vanishes.
Both Heaven and Man emerge as the defeated.
Only the peaks remain—
The fangs of ice, the tongue of fire,
Tangled together
In an act of love,
In total fusion.
Seeing the mountain, it was no longer a mountain;
Now, the mountain is the mountain again.
I take a sip of the mother-milk,
And return the earthen jar to Mont Blanc.
The man remains,
Yet he is no longer
The man of yesterday.
