The Leaning Tower of Pisa

In 1590, Mr. Galileo climbed to the top of the Leaning Tower

And tossed two extraordinary iron balls.

I took a one-hour train from Florence

To arrive at the tower’s base, fifty-five meters below.

I tried with all my might to push the tower upright,

But the counter-force knocked me back with a single blow.

In the brief moment

When the iron balls left his hand,

And when they returned to the palm—

Time stood still.

The line between two points is a steep slope,

And I slide toward the tilted river of time.

To anyone who can make the river flow backward,

I would offer my own two hands.

Go on, stretch them out bravely,

To feel the texture of gravitational acceleration,

To face the long centuries gazing at one another.

Go,

Return the iron balls

To the Gentleman.

But keep one for yourself, no matter what,
