Mount Baker (2)
Deeply immersed. The painting in the poem
Falls into the lake in the painting
By the lakeshore, sit the two of us
Mid-Autumn yesterday
You cut the double-yolk mooncake into quarters, sharing it with—
The rainbow trout
The very last drop of afterglow
And at the edge of the sky, the Big Dipper
Hands out
The ladle
Over the lake
A handful of ripples and mist suddenly rise
From a dream, an illusion
Pushing and yielding, we are attracted over
The last wedge of egg yolk
Swaying the moon
Into a hanging lantern, drifting—
Now in the clouds
Now on the lake
Now inside the tent
Flickering, bright and dim,
this same moon shared across the ends of the earth.
And shooting stars, ready for a wish
There is the golden glow of alpenglow, and a sumptuous breakfast
Wild blueberries all over the mountains
To eat our fill
A flock of idling, cloud-white, plump mountain goats
By the shores of Goat Lake, one by one, drifting up the slope
Look at you, quietly
Creeping up on a plump, well-fed
Bursting-with-curiosity baby marmot
While the bear’s droppings and pawprints
Are stamped by the lake
Into the dark, greasy, fresh mud.
