July 1st, Canada Day
By He Ping Dao
On this day, every Canadian
Is drawing a maple leaf
On paper, on faces, or within their hearts.
But I alone, high in the sky,
Carry a basket of eggs.
Setting out from Vancouver Island,
Passing over Rocky Mountains,
Lake Ontario,
Piercing through the aviation epoch of the East Coast,
Hatching one bizarre white cloud after another.
Who was it that spoke of "suddenly dreaming of sailing past the sun"?
A dashed line of gale and torrential rain,
The heavenly steed soaring across the void.
Sentences brewed for so long,
Pressed by the urgency of arrival,
Rapidly shifting
Between liquid, gas, and solid states.
You, of course, cannot see—
I have already dissolved into the ink of the dark clouds.
You can only see at the edge of the sky
A rainbow,
From the eyelashes of the sun,
Falling.
My colleagues mock me,
Saying I’ve drawn an octopus, leaking wind and spitting fire from all sides,
Leaping toward the heavens from the Pacific.
Stretching ten thousand miles
From coast to coast
Across the East and West,
The map of Canada
Turns into the projection
Of a dragon.
