The Far North

A black fish and a white fish, male and female,
chasing one another.
Air Canada
and the sled dogs.
Anchorage
is more like a rainbow bird,
weaving its own beautiful dream
in the Far North.
Numbers for north-south,
letters for east-west,
trapping the flow of cars
and the crowd of people
firmly in a net.
Those drifting from the vast ocean
must eventually
anchor,
locking themselves
into the continental plates.
That scenic spot called Anchor Point
sits at the westernmost tip of the Kenai Peninsula.
Into Anchorage, shrouded in the sea of fog,
we cast our very last net—
Dredging up
the returning salmon of Ship Creek,
and from Potter Marsh,
a massive flock of waterfowl.
Yet,
a single Raven.
He drives the sled dogs,
following a straight line of longitude,
escaping toward the Canadian border.
