The Vanishing Exit Glacier

Before Exit Glacier vanishes, you must
by all means—
land at the port of Seward by cruise ship,
or drop from the sky by plane,
and drive like mad.
You must follow closely
the retreating footprints of the ice.
Starting from 1899,
climbing higher step by step, passing 1917, 1926, 1951...
all the way to the little cabin
at an altitude of 1,000 meters—
September 1, 2022, high noon.
You find
the ruptured glacier
is beautiful enough to make one weep.
Countless photos, videos,
none can halt
her demise.
Halt, and deep sigh.
Upon the lonely, dead-silent, dust-transcending icefield.
With her,
merge—
ice crystals, white clouds, white water,
a single heart:
the triple point—
Nourishing the earth,
Purifying the air,
Regulating the temperature.
A fragile equilibrium.
Your footsteps
vanish into the icefield's
uneven gaps of teeth.
