Fairbanks:

from a placer pan
of silt and sand,
a sockeye salmon
escapes headlong
into Chena Hot Springs.
Between fire and ice,
hydrothermal fluids
circulate,
rising,
cooling,
descending.
Fireworks of sulfur
pierce its scales,
becoming sweat
that vanishes
into steam.
Cell by cell,
the flesh metamorphoses,
taking on
a crystalline sheen.
Along the fractures
of bone,
a golden embryo
begins to grow.
Caught in the vortex,
it resembles
a hydrothermal generator—
or perhaps
a prospector,
clutching a visible leaf of gold—
enough to buy
the property
of his dream.
The next morning,
I ordered
scrambled eggs,
bacon,
French fries,
toast,
and a cup
of black coffee.
