人之为学,远者载道,近者营生,夫为之远者,非大志者不能为也;为之近者,所以安身养命者也!

人之生也,衣食不可以无也,父母不可以不养也,人情不可以不顾也,人伦不可以不有也,灾疾不可以不应也。凡天地之间,生物有定,蓄之有方,取之有法,蓄取之道,非学不可以致知也!天地有所不满,人需亦有所不足矣,需而不能自给,则交易所以生也,交易之道,知物之贵贱而以值易之,不亏己而得之时需,此又不可以不学而能尽知之矣!人生事业,以专为上,专职一道,则他道疏矣,疏则见欺,见欺而戒又,是故人生为学,纵之一生而不可得穷矣!盖凡专职一艺之人,皆以艺而全生,学之精者,作之勤者,其得也丰,学之疏者,作之殆者,其得也薄,此所谓游于艺者也。

人之为学,有难易之分,知其难而为之,其意志必然坚定,其志学必然勤奋,夫勤而坚者,虽难必至。知其易而不为,所以不为者,惰而不屑者也,故天下之易事不知者亦多矣,见用之时,易而不知,此亦诚为憾事也。故人之为学,无时不可也,稍得闲暇,择可为者而为之,所以增益备用者也,所以启发智慧者也,所以不惰性情者也,所以不疏意志者也,所以增广见闻者也,诸多益处,人所以不为者,日无所思,思者志迩,是故君子思不出其右,日兢兢而暇少,乐所好不疲而无闷矣!

人生有性,情至而性发,发之得理,则身事皆益,发之悖理,则名恶而事坏,此又非学而不能知之者也!凡人学理,得教以条,条衡于人事,存乎一心,凡用之时,有过与不及之分,中和得当,又非智慧用心之人而不可得者也。故理之为用,学之于师,较之人事,徵而度之,得用之中者,存乎于心,可以损过而增益矣!所以为学之道,分善恶而知礼节,故曰礼者,节也,苟人而无所节度,则不逊之心生矣,生而不逊者,可谓独夫也矣!

人之为学,所以明理而经世者也,所以学亦不可以不慎矣。其所学之理偏,则其行也不中矣,其所学之理中,则其行不中亦不远矣。故君子为学,温文而中道,小人为学,偏激而无所拘束。所以为人师长者,不可以不谨慎言行,为人弟子者,不可以不察道而辩学。所以大道以一:“唯忠恕而已矣”,体己及人,不昧其心,其心正者,则偏学而正用矣,其心不正者,则正学而偏用矣!所以为学在于明理,明理在于用事,用事之道,不可以不察矣。是故曾子曰:“吾日三省吾身。为人谋而不忠乎?与朋友交而不信乎?传不习乎?” 此亦圣人为学致用之道矣,人能及此,庶几可以无咎矣!

人之为学,所以辩道也,知道之所以为道者,则其意诚矣。非其意诚者,其为学必不能全而通达,凡至精深之道,学之则易,达之则难矣,道尚未达,其用事之理又岂能周全而无咎矣!所以《大学》曰:“古之欲明明德於天下者,先治其国;欲治其国者,先齐其家;欲齐其家者,先修其身;欲修其身者,先正其心;欲正其心者,先诚其意;欲诚其意者,先致其知;致知在格物。物格而後知至,知至而後意诚,意诚而後心正,心正而後身修,身修而後家齐,家齐而後国治,国治而後天下平。”是故为学致知之道,以诚意为先,苟其意之不诚者,非可以志于道者也!苟其心之不正者,又岂能得仁者之道哉?非人之仁者,其身又焉得修明哉?非人之仁者,其家又焉得齐和哉?非人之仁者,又岂可为政治国哉?所以为学之人,不离中道,为之愈深,德名愈盛。“见善如不及,见恶如探汤”,为学者崇德而鄙恶,见善道趋之如不及者,见异道避之如不及矣。故为学至明理之处,非其书而不读,非其人而不交,非其事而不为,非其地而不处,此所以明志者也,所以志道者也,所以盛德者也!

人之为学,其天性禀赋有异,有智鲁不及之故,智者速而鲁者缓,夫曾参者,孔门后进之鲁者也,然传习圣人之道者,曾子独得其法矣。所以者何,志也!志之坚贞者,又何惧其缓哉?苟其志之不坚,虽智又何益哉?所以圣人为学,不失其赤子之心,存仁而弃智,达道者,唯持之一途矣!
