In Puning Temple①, Chengde County

Written by An Qi; translated by Xiaoyuan Yin

She had come to the Pu Ning Temple with a flimsy faith

Soaked in silence of her own now

The autumn wind and its golden flames

Intoxicated her deeply

Petals of the Chinese scholar tree covered the ground

And the prayer wheels swirled in solitude, while the hands that had touched them turned away

The Guanyin Bodhisattva had solemn features, from which earthly eyes should sheer away

So she bowed her head in awkwardness

With a heart of bashfulness

The sun brightened the dome

And the boundless open square below

All I needed was a stretch of peaceful land, no larger than a kasaya

For plain reminisces

And for relief from restlessness

Oh my autumn wind!

You have brought deafening echoes from the north

And blown away clothing of the bees

It was old red walls and white walls

That has made the Puning Temple

Once I had came as this woman did, who carried a candle in her hands

The bigger candles we lighted

The deeper disillusion we felt

①	Also translated as ‘Temple of Universal Peace’.

White Night①,Chengdu

(Also dedicated to Yongming Zhai)

Hallucination has led me here

All the way through Narrow Lane②, where shadows floated by

And stood me at the door of the White Night Bar

The character ‘Night’ was white, on that brass plate

Yet the ‘White’ took on a black hue

Its quaint peacefulness has led me here

Where bunches of poetry and wine flourished together

Beyond the realm of sanity

The bar has flat and sun-flecked features

It has gardens with scents of wood

And paper fish swinging in the air

Whose carved-out bodies were both stubborn

And cold too

They were scratches scattering over my view

No joy of any luxuriant day

Would equal that of this short night

The precious moment of this spring night!

I shook off the melodies on my skirt

And gave you an inkling by my desolate mood

The autumn wind had carried away someone familiar, to a strange land

① ‘White Night’ is also the name of a bar that Yongming Zhai owns, located in Chengdu.

② Also translated as ‘Zhai Lane’ or ‘Zhai Alley’.

Katsumi Kitchen①, Chengdu

(Also dedicated to Yawei Li)

It was in the dead of the night

When autumn breeze flew through Wide Lane②

And the dim streetlights faded away

I turned round accidentally

And saw my infatuation for here lingering around——

The Katsumi Kitchen!

Its grey stone gate

Were so tall and narrow

Like that of a house from sweet old times

When I strolled around here

Or took some pictures, I could hear there remaining on the surface of the table

Trails of boisterous cheers and laughter

The mist would rise at night

While ambience and elegance of gourmet food

Danced between the classic pages of a booklet

What a supreme enjoyment!

The dreamy red lanterns at the gate

With shadowy eyes open

They stood in the corner

Across the street, and along the lane too

Wide awake, like souvenirs from some memory

① ‘Katsumi Kitchen’ refers to the dining room of large-scale Buddhist temples originally, it is the name of a restaurant that Yawei Li owns here.

② Also translated as ‘Kuan Lane’ or ‘Kuan Alley’.
