Spring

[Lake]

Spring

In the blue distance
 a flock of Canadian geese
soaring with the clouds
 arrows home.

It is a determined journey.
 All day
I hear them honking joy
 to this chilly spring.

Their black heads and long necks
 parallel to the treetop lines
like spears hurled
 in the air, advancing

to their destination.
 I can feel their wings
fanning above, propellers
 pushing through the currents.

Some early birds
 slide into
a pool of shallow water
 still laced with a frozen sheet.

The question is
 how to break the ice -
I think of them
 ducking under

for treasure,
 their full breasts
pressing against
 the edge of thin crust,

each cracking -
 an opening of a petal,
a note of music,
 a breakthrough.
