《全唐诗》诗题下小注：

《纪事》云：“长安崇圣寺有贤妃妆殿，太宗曾召，妃久不至，怒之，因近是诗。”（原无标点符号）

《中国皇后全传》是这样说的：

要说徐妃作这篇《妆殿进太宗》还有一段小故事，长安崇圣寺中有一贤妃妆殿，太宗一次出游至此，偶发奇想，派人召徐妃来此共同游乐，过了很长时间徐妃都没有来，李世民很生气，徐妃于是写下这首诗以表达自己的想法。
