What Can Be Seen

Suddenly, violet tulips thrust their hands
through the rust of dry leaves that layer
dormant bulbs in a Northwest winter.

Rabbits and squirrels frequent
revived gardens, and deer wander
a quiet cul-de-sac on moonlit nights.

Water and sky, every creature’s territory.
Ducks who know the first warmth of spring rivers,
send their echoes into the sun-scented air.

The gas price, volatile as Dow Jones,
drops, hardly noticeable like a snowflake melt
on unfrozen ground. But ten cents is ten cents.

Visitors casting their eyes on Zen stones
may not know they were once in the wild
rough as Badlands rocks.
