Altruism
What if we got outside ourselves and there
really was an outside out there, not just
our insides turned inside out? What if there
really were a you beyond me, not just
the waves off my own fire, like those waves off
the backyard grill you can see the next yard through,
though not well -- just enough to know that off
to the right belongs to someone else, not you.
What if, when we said I love you, there were
a you to love as there is a yard beyond
to walk past the grill and get to? To endure
the endless walk through the self, knowing through a bond
that has no basis (for ourselves are all we know)
is altruism: not giving, but coming to know
someone is there through the wavy vision
of the self's heat, love become a decision.

烛照之心
倘若我们走出自我,果真有外界,
而非仅是内心翻转的倒影?
倘若你确实存在,并不是幻觉,
也非只是我心火焰的波影?
正如后院烧烤架腾起的热浪,
朦胧映见隔壁庭院,
依稀可辨。只是那方世界,
并不属于你,而是他人地界。
倘若我们说着“我爱你”,
那“你”确实存在,如同那庭院
穿过炭火便可抵达之地。
自我穿越之路漫长,却甘愿前往,
尽管无由可循(因自我是唯一所知),
这便是烛照:不是给予,而是去辨析,
在自我炽热的摇曳烛光里见你,
爱是抉择,不容迟疑。

Couple Sharing a Peach
It’s not the first time
we’ve bitten into a peach.
But now at the same time
it splits — half for each.
Our “then” is inside its “now,”
its halved pit unfleshed —
what was refreshed.
Two happinesses unfold
from one joy, folioed.
In a hotel room
our moment lies
with its ode inside,
a red tinge,
with a hinge.
情侣共享一颗桃
这不是初次
我俩共咬一颗桃子。
但如今同一时分
它裂开:正好均分。
果核半开着裸露,
今朝携往事缠绵,
旧情刷新再复燃。
两份幸福自一份喜乐,
绽放折合。
客栈内,

Why I am Not a Buddhist
I love desire, the state of want and thought
of how to get; building a kingdom in a soul
requires desire. I love the things I’ve sought —
you in your beltless bathrobe, tongues of cash that loll
from my billfold — and love what I want: clothes,
houses, redemption. Can a new mauve suit
equal God? Oh no, desire is ranked. To lose
a loved pen is not like losing faith. Acute
desire for nut gateau is driven out by death,
but the cake on its plate has meaning,
even when love is endangered and nothing matters.
For my mother, health; for my sister, bereft,
wholeness. But why is desire suffering?
Because want leaves a world in tatters?
How else but in tatters should a world be?
A columned porch set high above a lake.
Here, take my money. A loved face in agony,
the spirit gone. Here, use my rags of love.
为什么我不是佛教徒
我爱欲望,那种想要的感觉以及痴迷
如何去获取;在灵魂里建立王国之境
需要欲望。我爱孜孜以求的所得所觅:
披散着浴袍的你,鼓满皮夹卷舌现金
我更沉溺所爱所欲本身:华服锦衣,
房子,救赎。一袭新潮的浅紫套装
能等同上帝吗?哦,不,欲望自排名次。
遗失心爱的笔不等同失去信仰。对奶油
果仁蛋糕的迫切渴望被死神驱走,
但瓷盘上的蛋糕仍有着它的意义,
即使爱情危在旦夕,一切已不紧要。
我为母亲求安康;为妹妹,曾经沧桑,
求完好。只是为何欲望需要煎熬?
因为欲望使得世界支离破碎吗?
世界还要应该怎样,除了支离破碎?
一座露台廊柱高高矗在湖泊之上。
来,拿去我的钞票。心爱的脸在苦痛,
灵光已逝。来,收下我褴褛的爱意残章。

The Flaw
The best thing about a hand-made pattern
is the flaw.
Sooner or later in a hand-loomed rug,
among the squares and flattened triangles,
a little red nub might soar above a blue field,
or a purple cross might sneak in between
the neat ochre teeth of the border.
The flaw we live by, the wrong color floss,
now wreathes among the uniform strands
and, because it does not match,
makes a red bird fly,
turning blue field into sky.
It is almost, after long silence, a word
spoken aloud, a hand saying through the flaw,
I’m alive, discovered by your eye.
瑕疵
手工制作纹样最美妙之处
在于瑕疵。
或迟或早,在手织地毯中,
方阵与钝角延展的罅隙间
一枚猩红线头忽而刺破靛蓝疆界
或让紫十字偷渡至边陲
整齐的赭黄齿列
我们将就着的瑕疵,错色的绣线
如今盘绕在清一色棉缕中,
因其格格不入
竟令朱鸟振翅,
将靛野升格为穹苍。
这近乎长寂后的初啼,

I Too Bite the Juicy Fruit of Poetry
~ To Molly Peacock
Before I encountered you
I dreamed of poetry as a distant peacock
in a foreign land with the foreign language
its iridescent feathers of blue and green unfurled.
You handed me a peach with a flaw.
Half-opened, inviting —
yet one bite could pose a dilemma.
No wonder Prufrock wandered,
longing to decide,
but for you, a red tinge, a hint
to a new world.
“Relish the peach” I heard.
Now I look at leaves and fruits,
stones and stars, each a poem.

在遇见你之前,
诗于我有如异域的孔雀,
栖息在远方,以陌生的语言,
展开翠绿斑斓的羽翼。
你递给我一颗带瑕的蜜桃,

迟迟未决,

星子安娜 /Anna Yin加拿大密西沙加市首屆桂冠诗人,著六本诗集,四本翻译诗集,获北美多个诗歌奖项,中英文入选纽约时报,皇后大学,加拿大文学评论,中国日报等地发表。多次在国际诗歌节以及大学表演和講授诗歌,作品被加拿大国家电台,北美诗歌月和全国公交巡展以及学校选用,她的第11本书将于2025年出版。
Anna Yin was Mississauga’s Inaugural Poet Laureate (2015-17) and has authored six poetry collections and four books of translations including: Mirrors and Windows (Guernica Editions 2021). Anna won the 2005 Ted Plantos Memorial Award, two MARTYs, two scholarships from USA and grants from Ontario Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts. Her poems/translations have appeared at Queen’s Quarterly, ARC Poetry, New York Times, China Daily, CBC Radio, Literary Review of Canada etc. She read on Parliament Hill, at Austin International Poetry Festival, Edmonton Poetry Festival and universities in China, Canada and USA etc. She teaches Poetry Alive and her 11th book is Breaking Into Blossom (Frontenac Press 2025).

Molly Peacock is the author of eight collections of poetry, including The Widow’s Crayon Box, The Analyst: Poems and Cornucopia: New and Selected Poems. Her poems appear in leading literary journals such as Poetry and American Poetry Review and are widely anthologized. Recipient of fellowships from the Canada Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Institute for Citizens and Scholars and the Leon Levy Biography Center, she is the co-founder of Poetry in Motion on New York’s subways and buses and the founder of The Best Canadian Poetry. Peacock is also the author of two biographies about creativity in the lives of women artists: The Paper Garden: Mrs. Delany Begins Her Life’s Work at 72 and Flower Diary: Mary Hiester Reid Paints, Travels, Marries & Opens a Door.
