R.S.托马斯（Ronald Stuart Thomas，1913-2000），威尔士诗坛泰斗，二十世纪最强硬，最纯洁，最持久的抒情诗人之一。他的诗歌创作大致可以分为两个阶段，七十年代以前的诗作主要是关于威尔士的乡民与风光，历史与文化，以及他们自己做牧师的体验。从七十年代起诗人与“隐身上帝”的对话，探索人类内在的精神世界，所以他又有当代最伟大的宗教诗人之称。

 

 

窗景

 

像幅画一样摆在人面前，

但不如画脆弱，永恒；这些色彩

每天都在变化，随着光和距离，

没有哪位画家能实现和显示。然后有移动，

变化，像慢慢移动、有瘀伤的、

被阳光治愈的云，或如被雪覆盖

的一种忧郁心境；然而在晚上

却如黄金般振奋人心。纵观历史，

这把伟大的刷子从未停歇，

画也未干；只是眼睛却在一边

冷静地旁观，或者，如我们现在这样，

在透过泪水的镜头时，从这幅

未完成的画作中，我们看到了什么？

The View from the Window



Like a painting it is set before one,

But less brittle, ageless; these colours

Are renewed daily with variations

Of light and distance that no painter

Achieves or suggests. Then there is movement,

Change, as slowly the cloud bruises

Are healed by sunlight, or snow caps

A black mood; but gold at evening

To cheer the heart. All through history

The great brush has not rested,

Nor the paint dried; yet what eye,

Looking coolly, or, as we now,

through the tears' lenses, ever saw
