如果衆人對你心存猜忌，
你仍能自信如常並認為他們的猜忌情有可原；
如果你肯耐心等待不急不躁，
或遭人誹謗卻不以牙還牙，
或遭人憎恨卻不以惡報惡；
既不裝腔作勢，亦不氣盛趾高；
如果你有夢想，而又不為夢主宰；
如果你有神思，而又不走火入魔；
如果你坦然面對勝利和災難，
對虛渺的勝負榮辱胸懷曠蕩；
如果你能忍受有這樣的無賴，
歪麯你的口吐真言蒙騙笨漢，
或看着心血鑄就的事業崩潰，
仍能忍辱負重腳踏實地重新攀登；
如果你敢把取得的一切勝利，
為了更崇高的目標孤註一擲，
面臨失去，决心從頭再來
而絶口不提自己的損失；
如果人們早已離你而去，
你仍能堅守陣地奮力前驅，
身上已一無所有，
唯存意志在高喊“頂住”；
如果你跟平民交談而不變謙虛之態，
抑或與王侯散步而不露諂媚之顔；
如果敵友都無法對你造成傷害；
如果衆人對你信賴有加卻不過分依賴；
如果你能惜時如金
利用每一分鐘不可追回的光陰；
那麽，你的修為就會如天地般博大，並擁有了屬於自己的世界，

這首詩在英語世界中流傳甚廣。溫布爾登中央球場的運動員入口處所寫的“如果你坦然面對勝利和災難，對虛渺的勝負榮辱胸懷曠蕩”，正出於此。
諾貝爾文學奬對吉卜林的授奬詞寫道：“這位世界名作傢的作品以觀察入微、想象獨特、氣概雄渾、敘述卓越見長。”這樣的寫作特色也反映在這首詩中。
他的語言樸素直白，分節、用韻都十分講究，讀來抑揚頓挫。娓娓道來之餘，還兼具了磅礴的氣勢。
吉卜林幼時在寄養家庭遭到了不少虐待。似乎也因此，塑造了他堅韌的性格。詩人格外重視家庭，在《如果》中表達了對兒子的種種殷切期望。
其實，這首詩也鞭策着每一個希望能活出意義的人，無論年齡和性別。我們要求自己“三十而立”，也追求“君子坦蕩蕩”的境界。如何才能不斷攀登，成為更好的自己，實現人生的價值？
