上阕伊始“驿路侵斜月，溪桥度晓霜”二句，便在读者面前展现出一幅描绘深秋晨景的画图：漫漫“驿路”、淡淡“斜月”、小小“溪桥”、浓浓“晓霜”。最妙处还是一个“侵”字和一个“度”字，写出了斜月正在继续西沉，词人正踏上带霜的溪桥。一下子便把静态的景物画活了。“短篱残菊一枝黄”写旅途经过的山野人家的院内景象：竹篱低矮，傲霜的秋菊已经开过，只留下残枝上孤零零的一朵黄花。“残”字带着霜打风剥的痕迹，而“黄”花的“黄”色若与很快到来的枯萎相连，则已经失去照眼的娇艳了。“正是乱山深处、过重阳”之句，交代了时间是九月九日这个倍思亲人的重阳佳节，地点不是举家登高之地而是在乱山深处的旅途上。作者此时的心境之苍凉，可想而知，与前面凄清景物的描写相一致、相和谐。
下阕着重抒写词人悲苦心情。“旅枕元无梦，寒更每自长”是说：投宿旅店辗转不能入睡，冷森森的寒夜往往显得更加漫长。夜正长、不成眠，词人心中一定是波澜涌起了。“只言江左好风光，不道中原归思、转凄凉”句尾在全词之尾，份量沉重，词人仅用“江左”、“中原”两个地域性的词语，便把藏在胸中的积郁、悲苦之情全部倾泻出来了。“江左”，即江东，因古人在地理位置上以左为东，具体指长江下游以东（今江苏、浙江）一带，亦即南宋王朝的都城临安（今杭州）所在的地方。“中原”，广义而言，指长江以北黄河流域，狭义则指古豫州（今河南省）一带，因它地处古九州的中部，有天下之中的说法，这里既是北宋王朝的都城汴京（今河南开封）所在地，也是词人出生、成长之地。吕本中生于北宋神宗元丰年间，待到金人入侵北宋王朝随着徽宗、钦宗之被俘而覆灭之时，他正四十三岁。俟后他便离中原而来江左，在高宗驾前供职，钦赐进士出身。联系作者的这段经历，便完全可以理解这里所流露出来的无限凄苦、怅惘的感情，绝非无病呻吟：往日只听人说江南风光无限，现在身处江南，没想到怀念中原的思归之情却无法抑制，愈益炽烈，转而觉得江南景物到处都是一片凄凉。
该词就内容而论，寄托了作者对北宋王朝一统天下局面的怀念，尽管他也因反对奸相秦桧卖国求和而罢官，但全篇除了仅仅寄哀情于景之外，却没有与他同时而稍后的爱国词人陆游、辛弃疾那种直抒“抚时感事”之慨的豪放风格，这便是作者的思想局限之所在。
