据英国每日电讯报13日报道,英国奥运大臣特莎·乔韦尔近日表示,如果早知道现在的经济陷入衰退,英国就不会去申办2012年奥运会。

  特莎·乔韦尔10日在一次休闲业者晚餐会上说:“如果我们早知道今天发生的一切,我们还会申办奥运会吗?答案几乎肯定是——不会”。

  英格兰银行12日发出警告称:尽管经济学家要到明年初才能下定论,但受到全球金融危机的影响,英国经济可能已经陷入了衰退。

  英国经济增长放缓使奥运承包商感受到更大的压力,而政府也已削减了奥运预算。但仍有大臣们坚持认为奥运支出有助于经济增长。

  但在随后的一份声明中这位奥运大臣似乎想淡化她之前的说法。

  “如果经济像预期的那样大规模衰退,我相信肯定会有人认为现在不是为像奥运会这样的公共项目进行大规模投资的时候。现在的情况确实不同以往,英国筹办奥运会的投资很可能成为拉动英国经济的一个亮点,”乔韦尔说。
