Too Naked Too Wingless in This Recurring Dream
Derk Wynand
Not our names the owl called that night,
not an owl-name either, since the untranslatable part
of the cry that threatened to turn it
into poetry sounded more like that desperate vibrato
of Fellini’s treed bachelor, in Amarcord –
remember? And how receptive was the silence
into which owl-call and man-call vanished, and your sigh.
We woke up, softly moaning of course to be woken, alarmed
into grumpiness, but on balance glad to find ourselves
butt-to-butt and not out on a limb, shaking
it in the way unattached teens in and out of large groups do
their cellphones, so you instantly know all you need
to know about adolescent dynamics. The owl
did not shut up just because we began to complain or
because of the altered rhythms of our more conscious
breathing, and we too did not bite back our complaints
or stop butting up to each other, and maybe because
of the bird cry’s ongoing urgency or the appeal
of the memory of Fellini’s bachelor, we resisted
going back to our demographically comforting dreams of
the eldercare system and the internet and meteors out of nowhere
threatening to ruin our otherwise blue-sky walks and
we prayed, though godless and each for himself, not wanting
to make a show of it, for all the prayerful suicides
too lonely too afraid to go it alone.

_________________ 随风随缘 |

Lost in Translation?
Translation
Derk Wynand
Someone’s skin makes a good fit
around his body, some days thin,
other days not.
Her shirt covers him and her arm
keeps working higher
up his sleeve.
What else? Sometimes they wear
his heart on it; sometimes
it’s her own.
Or the heart stays hidden,
as in the younger work of poets.
His usually did and does.
Her heart often lifts
to his throat. His often lies
in her hands – it’s a true lie and white.
Nothing can stop her blood
from coursing through his wrist,
so it’s her pulse that marks his time.
She breathes with his lungs,
gasps with his astonishment,
sighs with his relief.
Someone’s thoughts occur to him,
even as his, he supposes,
must occur to her.
No wonder her head fits so well
on his shoulder, into any
of his several hats.
When she sleeps his sleep,
their dreams soon enough follow;
nightmares always confuse him and her.
When he awakes, she yawns
or vice versa, and one of them
never fails to gather them both together.
Sadly, they pull up each other’s socks,
and it’s not long before
a shoe is on the other foot,
which all too often ends up
in his mouth. Her tongue
keeps finding a way
into his cheek, and his words
and silences seem only to
catch there, there on its tip.

不一会儿他们就做起了梦;
_________________ 随风随缘 |

_________________ 诗歌是灵魂的歌唱.
