成年

at the DMV's you stand in line
waiting to take the 1st exam.
to get a driver license

behind the desk a black woman
she asks for your birth certificate
I see conduits on the walls and ceilings
I see coffees, creams and sugars
raise thumbs, and fingerprints
being scanned into the database

forget your teddies, you pass the test
on the way home, all cars
all highways and streets
you have conquered your 1st bear
now let's bring it back to our cave
and celebrate with beers

(well done, my son)

Sugarcane or sugar candy? I thought only rural people nowadays chewed sugarcane, whereas city slickers usually drink sugarcane juice.

thanks, I had hesitation on that line when first put it.
I have changed it to
"I see coffees, creams and sugars"

these are meant to be connotative: different peoples/races;

if not, they are just coffees in the office.

we don't have rituals like tribal people for a boy turning into a man,
in present days, driver license or beer on the 1st day as an adult
almost become the ritual.
that's how they tap into the society as implied in this poem
with words like "conduits", "highways and streets"
that were long established before them.

Thanks.
