NON-POEM

For anyone to think he has succeeded
In the writing of a poem
Is naught but proof of feeble standards or low aims.
A poem is a wish one wafts from mud and bricks
Of Naugatuck or Saugatuck or Keokuk
Toward stars beyond the range of sight or thought.
It provides us neither information nor analysis
And its attempt to do so would only be its suicide.

A poem is an empty net one swings about at dusk
In hopes of capturing a monarch butterfly
Or an awakening luna moth, aspiring
To net one or the other in an entire lifetime,
For to attempt a poem is knowingly to launch
In face of certain failure.
An attempt to put into words ineffability of Beauty.
Thus to dare what is impossible
Is the peak achievement of the poet's work.

John Mahoney

I love this one very much.
Thanks for sharing, indeed.

A poem is a wish one wafts from mud and bricks
Of Naugatuck or Saugatuck or Keokuk

This is American style. Wink

"Of Naugatuck or Saugatuck or Keokuk ", Very Happy
