朱一贵于康熙五十二年(1713年)随移民潮移民台湾,年轻时曾任衙役,后为佣工、种田为生,在鸭母寮(今高雄县内门乡光兴村)以养鸭为业,为人豪爽好客,有“小孟尝”、“鸭母王”之称。
康熙六十年(1721年),凤山县知县出缺,暂由知府王珍兼理,王珍把知县职务交由他儿子管理,但王珍的儿子利用职权横征暴敛,引起普遍不满。众人遂推朱一贵为盟主,发动革命,下淡水溪槟榔林的客家人杜君英响应革命,合作攻取台湾府城(今台南市);响应者有许多是明郑时期将校武官,攻下台湾府城后,朱一贵承袭明朝的制度,国号大明,年号永和,且废除满族薙发令,将旗装脱下、长辫剪断,恢复明朝时的服装及传统汉人的发式。
朱一贵占领府城后旋即称王,名曰中兴王(民间俗称鸭母王),但后来因闽粤内哄分裂,导致其近二个月即遭清军扑灭,清军亦借此事彻底扫荡拔除南明残余军队;由此可知,当时即便没有朱一贵在台湾反清,也会有其他人反清:因为朱一贵事件接近可识为是清朝暗中怂恿制造,朱一贵是不自知被利用当“引蛇(南明残军)出洞”工具。
朱一贵虽为草莽英雄,但识见、气宇亦有过人之处,被捕时面对平乱之福建水师提督施世骠(收台居鹿港施琅之子,施公案施世纶之弟),犹昂然自立,自称孤家,后被解送北京凌迟处死。
民间传说朱一贵死后被玉皇大帝封为“台南小南城隍”,在台南市小南门城隍庙被祀为主神。据说朱一贵养鸭于鸭母寮,于今高雄县内门乡光兴村内。鸭母寮兴安宫供奉朱一贵神位,兴安宫在庙前水池中增置朱一贵赶鸭子的塑像。
