hū hǎn， yī gè jìn dì cháo zhe 'ā kāi yà rén shēn kuàng de hǎi chuán jí páo。 　　　　 tú diū sī zhī zǐ， cǐ shí zǐ rán yī rén， pū xiàng qián pái de shǒu lǐng， 　　　　 zhàn zài lǎo rén héng héng nài liú sī zhī zǐ héng héng de yù mǎ biān， 　　　　 dà shēng hǎn dào， yòng cháng liǎo chì bǎng de huà yǔ：“ lǎo rén jiā， 　　　　 shuō shí huà， zhè xiē nián qīng de zhàn yǒng yǐ bǎ nǐ zhé mó dé jīn pí lì jìn； 　　　　 nǐ de lì duì dí 'é mò dé sī hǎn dào： 　　　　“ tú diū sī zhī zǐ， diào guò mǎ tóu， fàng kāi zhuī fēng de kuài mǎ， gǎn kuài chè lí！ 　　　　 hái bù zhī dào má？ zhòu sī diào dù de shèng lì yǐ bù zài guī shǔ yú nǐ。 de huà tiáo lǐ fēn míng， shuō dé yī diǎn bù cuò。 　　　　 dàn shì， wǒ de xīn líng jiāng nán yǐ chéng shòu cǐ bān jù tòng héng héng 　　　　 jiāng lái， hè kè tuō 'ěr huì dāng zhe tè luò yī rén de liǎn miàn， fàng dǎn chuī hǎn： 　　　　 ‘ tú diū sī zhī zǐ zài wǒ shǒu xià bài tuì， bèi wǒ gǎn huí tā de hǎi chuán！ ’ 　　　　 tā huì rú cǐ chuī léi； tiān ní， wǒ hèn bù néng liè dì cáng shēn！”’ 　　　　　　 tīng bà zhè fān huà， nài sī tuō 'ěr， gé ruì ní yà de chē zhàn zhě dá dào： 　　　　“ āi， yǒng gǎn de tú diū sī de 'ér zǐ， nǐ shuō liǎo xiē shénme！ 　　　　 ràng tā chuī qù bā； shuō nǐ shì nuò fū， dǎn xiǎo guǐ， suí tā de biàn！ 　　　　 tè luò yī rén hé dá 'ěr dá ní yà bīng zhòng jué bù huì xiāng xìn， 　　　　 xīn xiōng háo zhuàng de tè luò yī yǒng shì de qī zǐ men yě bù huì héng héng shuí huì xiāng xìn ní？ 　　　　 nǐ bǎ tā men de zhàng fū dǎ fān zài ní dì shàng， bào sǐ zài qīng chūn de nián huá lǐ。” 　　　　　　 yán bà， tā diào zhuǎn mǎ tóu， fēng kuài de yù mǎ táo wáng， huì rù 　　　　 rén huáng mǎ jiào de zhàn zhèn。 tè luò yī rén hé hè kè tuō 'ěr， hǎn chū 　　　　 cū yě de háo jiào， tóu chū bēi hǒu de qiāng xiè， yǔ diǎn yī bān。 　　　　 dǐng zhe shǎn liàng de tóu kuī， gāo dà de hè kè tuō 'ěr lì shēng hǎn dào： 　　　　“ tú diū sī zhī zǐ， jià yù kuài mǎ de dá nài rén zūn nǐ shèng guò duì bié de tóng bāo， 　　　　 ràng nǐ róng zuò tǐ miàn de xí wèi， xiǎng yòng féi měi de ròu kuài hé mǎn bēi de chún jiǔ。 　　　　 dàn xiàn zài， tā men huì chǐ xiào nǐ， hè kè tuō 'ěr pīn dǎ？ 　　　　 zài xīn hún shēn chù， tā sān cì jué yì huí tóu zài zhàn， 　　　　 dàn sān cì shòu zǔ yú duō móu shàn duàn de zhòu sī， cóng yī dá shān shàng shuǎi xià 　　　　 zhà léi， shì yì tè luò zǐ yǐ diǎn tóu dāyìng， 　　　　 ràng wǒ huò shèng， zhēng dé jù dà de guāng róng， ér bǎ zāinàn liú gěi 　　　　 wǒ men de dí rén。 zhè qún bèn dàn， zhù qǐ zhè me gè qiáng bà， 　　　　 cuì ruò de xiǎo wán yì， gēn Greeks with his thunders and lightnings. 　　Nestor alone continues in the field in great danger: Diomed relieves him; 　　whose exploits, and those of Hector, are excellently described. Juno 　　endeavours to animate Neptune to the assistance of the Greeks, but in 　　vain. The acts of Teucer, who is at length wounded by Hector, and carried 　　off. Juno and Minerva prepare to aid the Grecians, but are restrained by 　　Iris, sent from Jupiter. The night puts an end to the battle. Hector 　　continues in the field, (the Greeks being driven to their fortifications 　　before the ships,) and gives orders to keep the watch all night in the 　　camp, to prevent the enemy from re-embarking and escaping by flight. They 　　kindle fires through all the fields, and pass the night under arms. 　　 　　The time of seven and twenty days is employed from the opening of the poem 　　to the end of this book. God, by gods adored 　　 We own thy might, our father and our lord! 　　 But, ah! permit to pity human state: 　　 If not to help, at least lament their fate. 　　 From fields forbidden we submiss refrain, 　　 With arms unaiding mourn our Argives slain; 　　 Yet grant my counsels still their breasts may move, 　　 Or all must perish in the wrath of Jove." 　　 　　 The cloud-compelling god her suit approved, 　　 And smiled superior on his best beloved; 　　 Then call'd his coursers, and his chariot took; 　　 The stedfast firmament beneath them shook: 　　 Rapt by the ethereal steeds the chariot roll'd; 　　 Brass were their hoofs, their curling manes of gold: 　　 Of heaven's undrossy gold the gods array, 　　 Refulgent, flash'd intolerable day. 　　 High on the throne he shines: his coursers fly 　　 Between the extended earth and starry sky. 　　 But when to Ida's topmost height he came, 　　 (Fair nurse of fountains, and of savage game,) 　　 Where o'er her pointed summits proudly raised, 　　 His fane breathed odours, and his altar blazed: 　　 There, from his radiant car, the sacred sire 　　 Of gods and men released the steeds of fire: 　　 Blue ambient mists the immortal steeds embraced; 　　 High on the cloudy point his seat he placed; 　　 Thence his broad eye the subject world surveys, 　　 The town, and tents, and navigable seas. 　　 　　 Now had the Grecians snatch'd a short repast, 　　 And buckled on their shining arms with haste. 　　 Troy roused as soon; for on this dreadful day 　　 The fate of fathers, wives, and infants lay. 　　 The gates unfolding pour forth all their train; 　　 Squadrons on squadrons cloud the dusky plain: 　　 Men, steeds, and chariots shake the trembling ground, 　　 The tumult thickens, and the skies resound; 　　 And now with shouts the shocking armies closed, 　　 To lances lances, shields to shields opposed, 　　 Host against host with shadowy legends drew, 　　 The sounding darts in iron tempests flew; 　　 Victors and vanquish'd join promiscuous cries, 　　 Triumphant shouts and dying groans arise; 　　 With streaming blood the slippery fields are dyed, 　　 And slaughter'd heroes swell the dreadful tide. 　　 Long as the morning beams, increasing bright, 　　 O'er heaven's clear azure spread the sacred light, 　　 Commutual death the fate of war confounds, 　　 Each adverse battle gored with equal wounds. 　　 But when the sun the height of heaven ascends, 　　 The sire of gods his golden scales suspends,(192) 　　 With equal hand: in these explored the fate 　　 Of Greece and Troy, and poised the mighty weight: 　　 Press'd with its load, the Grecian balance lies 　　 Low sunk on earth, the Trojan strikes the skies. 　　 Then Jove from Ida's top his horrors spreads; 　　 The clouds burst dreadful o'er the Grecian heads; 　　 Thick lightnings flash; the muttering thunder rolls; 　　 Their strength he withers, and unmans their souls. 　　 Before his wrath the trembling hosts retire; 　　 The gods in terrors, and the skies on fire. 　　 Nor great Idomeneus that sight could bear, 　　 Nor each stern Ajax, thunderbolts of war: 　　 Nor he, the king of war, the alarm sustain'd 　　 Nestor alone, amidst the storm remain'd. 　　 Unwilling he remain'd, for Paris' dart 　　 Had pierced his courser in a mortal part; 　　 Fix'd in the forehead, where the springing man 　　 Curl'd o'er the brow, it stung him to the brain; 　　 Mad with his anguish, he begins to rear, 　　 Paw with his hoofs aloft, and lash the air. 　　 Scarce had his falchion cut the reins, and freed 　　 The encumber'd chariot from the dying steed, 　　 When dreadful Hector, thundering through the war, 　　 Pour'd to the tumult on his whirling car. 　　 That day had stretch'd beneath his matchless hand 　　 The hoary monarch of the Pylian band, 　　 But Diomed beheld; from forth the crowd 　　 He rush'd, and on Ulysses call'd aloud: 　　 　　 "Whither, oh whither does Ulysses run? 　　 Oh, flight unworthy great Laertes' son! 　　 Mix'd with the vulgar shall thy fate be found, 　　 Pierced in the back, a vile, dishonest wound? 　　 Oh turn and save from Hector's direful rage 　　 The glory of the Greeks, the Pylian sage." 　　 His fruitless words are lost unheard in air, 　　 Ulysses seeks the ships, and shelters there. 　　 But bold Tydides to the rescue goes, 　　 A single warrior midst a host of foes; 　　 Before the coursers with a sudden spring 　　 He leap'd, and anxious thus bespoke the king: 　　 　　 "Great perils, father! wait the unequal fight; 　　 These younger champions will oppress thy might. 　　 Thy veins no more with ancient vigour glow, 　　 Weak is thy servant, and thy coursers slow. 　　 Then haste, ascend my seat, and from the car 　　 Observe the steeds of Tros, renown'd in war. 　　 Practised alike to turn, to stop, to chase, 　　 To dare the fight, or urge the rapid race: 　　 These late obey'd Æneas' guiding rein; 　　 Leave thou thy chariot to our faithful train; 　　 With these against yon Trojans will we go, 　　 Nor shall great Hector want an equal foe; 　　 Fierce as he is, even he may learn to fear 　　 The thirsty fury of my flying spear." 　　 　　 Thus said the chief; and Nestor, skill'd in war, 　　 Approves his counsel, and ascends the car: 　　 The steeds he left, their trusty servants hold; 　　 Eurymedon, and Sthenelus the bold: 　　 The reverend charioteer directs the course, 　　 And strains his aged arm to lash the horse. 　　 Hector they face; unknowing how to fear, 　　 Fierce he drove on; Tydides whirl'd his spear. 　　 The spear with erring haste mistook its way, 　　 But plunged in Eniopeus' bosom lay. 　　 His opening hand in death forsakes the rein; 　　 The steeds fly back: he falls, and spurns the plain. 　　 Great Hector sorrows for his servant kill'd, 　　 Yet unrevenged permits to press the field; 　　 Till, to supply his place and rule the car, 　　 Rose Archeptolemus, the fierce in war. 　　 And now had death and horror cover'd all;(193) 　　 Like timorous flocks the Trojans in their wall 　　 Inclosed had bled: but Jove with awful sound 　　 Roll'd the big thunder o'er the vast profound: 　　 Full in Tydides' face the lightning flew; 　　 The ground before him flamed with sulphur blue; 　　 The quivering steeds fell prostrate at the sight; 　　 And Nestor's trembling hand confess'd his fright: 　　 He dropp'd the reins: and, shook with sacred dread, 　　 Thus, turning, warn'd the intrepid Diomed: 　　 　　 "O chief! too daring in thy friend's defence 　　 Retire advised, and urge the chariot hence. 　　 This day, averse, the sovereign of the skies 　　 Assists great Hector, and our palm denies. 　　 Some other sun may see the happier hour, 　　 When Greece shall conquer by his heavenly power. 　　 'Tis not in man his fix'd decree to move: 　　 The great will glory to submit to Jove." 　　 　　 "O reverend prince! (Tydides thus replies) 　　 Thy years are awful, and thy words are wise. 　　 But ah, what grief! should haughty Hector boast 　　 I fled inglorious to the guarded coast. 　　 Before that dire disgrace shall blast my fame, 　　 O'erwhelm me, earth; and hide a warrior's shame!" 　　 To whom Gerenian Nestor thus replied:(194) 　　 "Gods! can thy courage fear the Phrygian's pride? 　　 Hector may vaunt, but who shall heed the boast? 　　 Not those who felt thy arm, the Dardan host, 　　 Nor Troy, yet bleeding in her heroes lost; 　　 Not even a Phrygian dame, who dreads the sword 　　 That laid in dust her loved, lamented lord." 　　 He said, and, hasty, o'er the gasping throng 　　 Drives the swift steeds: the chariot smokes along; 　　 The shouts of Trojans thicken in the wind; 　　 The storm of hissing javelins pours behind. 　　 Then with a voice that shakes the solid skies, 　　 Pleased, Hector braves the warrior as he flies. 　　 "Go, mighty hero! graced above the rest 　　 In seats of council and the sumptuous feast: 　　 Now hope no more those honours from thy train; 　　 Go less than woman, in the form of man! 　　 To scale our walls, to wrap our towers in flames, 　　 To lead in exile the fair Phrygian dames, 　　 Thy once proud hopes, presumptuous prince! are fled; 　　 This arm shall reach thy heart, and stretch thee dead." 　　 　　 Now fears dissuade him, and now hopes invite. 　　 To stop his coursers, and to stand the fight; 　　 Thrice turn'd the chief, and thrice imperial Jove 　　 On Ida's summits thunder'd from above. 　　 Great Hector heard; he saw the flashing light, 　　 (The sign of conquest,) and thus urged the fight: 　　 　　 "Hear, every Trojan, Lycian, Dardan band, 　　 All famed in war, and dreadful hand to hand. 　　 Be mindful of the wreaths your arms have won, 　　 Your great forefathers' glories, and your own. 　　 Heard ye the voice of Jove? All above 　　 Submit and tremble at the hand of Jove." 　　 　　 Now godlike Hector, to whose matchless might 　　 Jove gave the glory of the destined fight, 　　 Squadrons on squadrons drives, and fills the fields 　　 With close-ranged chariots, and with thicken'd shields. 　　 Where the deep trench in length extended lay, 　　 Compacted troops stand wedged in firm array, 　　 A dreadful front! they shake the brands, and threat 　　 With long-destroying flames the hostile fleet. 　　 The king of men, by Juno's self inspired, 　　 Toil'd through the tents, and all his army fired. 　　 Swift as he moved, he lifted in his hand 　　 His purple robe, bright ensign of command. 　　 High on the midmost bark the king appear'd: 　　 There, from Ulysses' deck, his voice was heard: 　　 To Ajax and Achilles reach'd the sound, 　　 Whose distant ships the guarded navy bound. 　　 "O Argives! shame of human race! xīn qíng chén zhòng yōu yì， 　　 zhàn zài mén biān， qīng xiè cū mǎng de fèn yuàn， 　　 fā chū kě pà de hū xiào， duì suǒ yòu de shén míng jiào hǎn： 　　“ fù qīn zhòu sī， gè wèi xìng fú de、 cháng shēng bù lǎo de shén xiān， 　　 lái bā， qián lái kàn kàn yī fú huá jī、 huāng kù de 　　 qí jǐng！ ā fú luó dǐ tè， zhòu sī de nǚ 'ér， yī guàn shǐ wǒ 　　 méng shòu chǐ rǔ， què hé shā rén hài mìng de 'ā ruì sī tōu qíng， 　　 zhǐ yīn tā cháng dé jùn měi， shuāng jiǎo líng biàn， ér wǒ què 　　 shēng lái qué tuǐ， suī rán zhè bù shì wǒ de guò cuò， 　　 ér shì fù mǔ de zé rèn héng héng dàn yuàn tā men bù céng bǎ wǒ shēng yǎng xià lái！ 　　 nǐ men jiāng huì kàn jiàn， tā liǎ wò tǎng zài wǒ de shuì chuáng， 　　 yōng bào zuò lè， qíng yì mián cháng。 jiàn cǐ qíng jǐng， wǒ de xīn líng tòng dé fā huāng。 　　 bù guò， wǒ xiǎng tā men bù huì yuàn yì jì xù shuì tǎng， nǎ pà zhǐ shì yī huì 'ér， 　　 jìn guǎn tā liǎ hù 'ài zhì shēn； wǒ gǎn shuō， tā men jiāng wú yì 　　 wò tǎng， zhǐ shì wú nài wǒ de zhù tóng， bǎ tā men jǐn jǐn gū zhā， 　　 zhí dào tā de fù qīn jiāo hái suǒ yòu de cái lǐ， wèile 　　 zhè gè bù yào liǎn de gū niàn， wǒ céng zuò guò fù cháng： 　　 tā de nǚ 'ér suī rán piào liàng， dàn què bù néng bǎ jī qíng kòng zhǎng。” 　　 tā yán bà， zhòng shén jiē zhǒng 'ér lái， yōng jù zài qīng tóng pū dì de 　　 guān fáng， bāo kuò huán yōng dà dì de bō sài dōng， shàn xǐ zhù xìn de 　　 hè 'ěr mò sī hé yuǎn shè zhī wáng 'ā bō luó， dàn 　　 nǚ shén men què chū yú xiū sè， quándōu liú zài gè zì de jiā fáng。 　　 cì sòng jiā měi zhī wù de bù sǐ zhě men zhàn zài mén tīng lǐ， 　　 yǎn jiàn shén miào de hè fǎ yī sī tuō sī de jié zuò， 　　 rěn jùn bù jìn， hōng rán dà xiào héng héng zhè bāng xìng fú de xiān zūn。 　　 qí shí， shén men wàng zhe zì jǐ de jìn lín， kāi kǒu shuō dào： 　　“ è chǒu zhī shì， bù huì chāng dá。 qiáo， màn tuǐ de dài zhe liǎo 　　 kuài tuǐ de， xiàng xiàn zài yī yàng， chí màn de hè fǎ yī sī tuō sī， 　　 suī shuō qué guǎi， què shè jì dài zhù liǎo 'ā ruì sī， é lín bō sī zhū shén zhōng 　　 tuǐ jiǎo zuì kuài de yī wèi； ā ruì sī bì xū cháng fù tōng jiān dài lái de sǔn shāng。” 　　 jiù zhè yàng， shén men hù xiāng yì lùn， yī fān shuō gào； qí shí， 　　 wáng zhě 'ā bō luó， zhòu sī zhī zǐ， duì hè 'ěr mò sī shuō dào： 　　“ hè 'ěr mò sī， zhòu sī zhī zǐ， xìn shǐ， cì zào jiā měi de shén míng， 　　 gào sù wǒ， nǐ shì fǒu yuàn yì hé tā tóng chuáng， bèi zhè xiē qiáng rèn de 　　 wǎng xiàn méng zhào， shuì tǎng zài jīn sè de 'ā fú luó dǐ tè shēn bàng？” 　　 tīng bà zhè fān huà， xìn shǐ 'ā 'ěr jí fēng tè sī dá dào： 　　“ dàn yuàn cǐ shì dàngzhēn， ā bō luó， wǒ de yuǎn shè zhī wáng！ 　　 jí biàn zhào shàng sān bèi yú cǐ de shéng xiàn， bù jìn de sī wǎng， 　　 jí biàn suǒ yòu de shén míng， bāo kuò nǚ shén， quándōu bàng zhàn guān wàng， 　　 wǒ réng yuàn hé tā yī qǐ， shuì tǎng zài jīn sè de 'ā fú luó dǐ tè shēn bàng。” 　　 tā yán bà， shén men hōng táng dà xiào， zhǐ yòu 　　 bō sài dōng lì wài， bù tíng dì kěn qiú， kěn qiú 　　 hè fǎ yī sī tuō sī， zhù míng de shén gōng， yào tā fàng chū 'ā ruì sī， 　　 sòng qù cháng liǎo chì bǎng de huà yǔ， duì tā shuō dào： 　　“ ràng tā chū lái bā， wǒ bǎo zhèng tā huì 'àn nǐ de yào qiú， dāng zhe bù sǐ de 　　 shén zhī de liǎn miàn， fù zú suǒ qiàn de yī qiē， měi yī fēn hé yí de huí cháng。” 　　 tīng bà zhè fān huà， zhù míng de qiáng bì shén gōng dá dào： 　　“ bō sài dōng， liè dì zhī shén， bù yào cuī wǒ zhè me zuò。 　　 duì kě bēi de wú lài， bǎo zhèng shì wú yòng de fèi wù。 　　 wǒ zěn néng bǎ nǐ jiū zhù bù fàng， dāng zhe bù sǐ de zhòng shén， cháng ruò 　　 ā ruì sī chōu shēn 'ér qù， jì duǒ bì liǎo zhài wù， yòu táo chū liǎo xiàn wǎng？” 　　 tīng bà zhè fān huà， liè dì zhī shén bō sài dōng dá dào： 　　“ cháng ruò， hè fǎ yī sī tuō sī， ā ruì sī liù zhī dà huài de jiā pǐn， gōng cháng shēng bù lǎo de shén zhī cā yòng， 　　 tì tā chuān shàng piào liàng de yī cháng， nǚ shén měi dé ràng mù jī zhě jīng chà。 　　 jiù zhè yàng， zhù míng de gē shǒu yī fān chàng lì 'é sī hé láo dá mǎ sī qǐ wǔ， 　　 jǐn cǐ 'èr rén héng héng guó dù zhōng， tā liǎ de wǔ dǎo shuí yě pān bǐ bù shàng。 　　 yú shì， wǔ zhě shǒu ná zǐ hóng sè de yuán qiú， yī jiàn piào liàng de 　　 jīng pǐn， yóu néng gōng qiǎo jiàng bō lǔ bō sī zhì zuò。 èr zhě zhōng 　　 yī rén wān yāo hòu yǎng， pāo qiú chū shǒu， chōng xiàng tóu dài huàn yǐng de 　　 yún céng， lìng yī rén gāo gāo yuè qǐ， qīng qīng sōng sōng pái fàng dé zhěng zhěng qí qí de lǐ wù， 　　 yōng guì de fǎ yī 'ā jī yà rén dài dào cǐ dì de měi yī jiàn kuì zèng， 　　 xīn xiǎng yàn shí de xǐ yuè， líng tīng gē shǒu de sòng chàng。 　　 wǒ jiāng gěi tā yī After which splendid entertainments are 　　made, where the celebrated musician and poet, Demodocus, plays and 　　sings to the guests. They next proceed to the games, the race, the 　　wrestling, discus, &c., where Ulysses casts a prodigious length, 　　to the admiration of all the spectators. They return again to the 　　banquet and Demodocus sings the loves of Mars and Venus. how firm his tread! 　　His limbs how turn'd! how broad his shoulders spread! 　　By age unbroke!--but all-consuming care 　　Destroys perhaps the strength that time would spare: 　　Dire is the ocean, dread in all its forms! 　　Who, suppliant to the king and peers, implores 　　A speedy voyage to his native shore." 　　"Wise wanders, Laodam, thy erring tongue 　　The sports of glory to the brave belong 　　(Retorts Euryalus): he bears no claim 　　Among the great, unlike the sons of Fame. 　　A wandering merchant he frequents the main 　　Some mean seafarer in pursuit of gain; 　　Studious of freight, in naval trade well skill'd, 　　But dreads the athletic labours of the field." 　　Incensed, Ulysses with a frown replies: 　　"O forward to proclaim thy soul unwise! 　　With partial hands the gods their gifts dispense; 　　Some greatly think, some speak with manly sense; 　　Here Heaven an elegance of form denies, 　　But wisdom the defect of form supplies; 　　This man with energy of thought controls, 　　And steals with modest violence our souls; 　　He speaks reservedly, but he speaks with force, 　　Nor can one word be changed but for a worse; 　　In public more than mortal he appears, 　　And as he moves, the praising crowd reveres; 　　While others, beauteous as the etherial kind, 　　The nobler portion went, a knowing mind, 　　In outward show Heaven gives thee to excel. 　　But Heaven denies the praise of thinking well 　　I'll bear the brave a rude ungovern'd tongue, 　　And, youth, my generous soul resents the wrong. 　　Skill'd in heroic exercise, I claim 　　A post of honour with the sons of Fame. 　　Such was my boast while vigour crown'd my days, 　　Now care surrounds me, and my force decays; 　　Inured a melancholy part to bear 　　In scenes of death, by tempest and by war 　　Yet thus by woes impair'd, no more I waive 　　To prove the hero--slander stings the brave." 　　 　　Then gliding forward with a furious bound 　　He wrench'd a rocky fragment from the ground 　　By far more ponderous, and more huge by far 　　Than what Phaeacia's sons discharged in air. 　　Fierce from his arm the enormous load he flings; 　　Sonorous through the shaded air it sings; 　　Couch'd to the earth, tempestuous as it flies, 　　The crowd gaze upward while it cleaves the skies. 　　Beyond all marks, with many a giddy round 　　Down-rushing, it up-turns a hill of ground. 　　 　　That Instant Pallas, bursting from a cloud, 　　Fix'd a distinguish'd mark, and cried aloud: 　　 　　"E'en he who, sightless, wants his visual ray 　　May by his touch alone award the day: 　　Thy signal throw transcends the utmost bound 　　Of every champion by a length of ground: 　　Securely bid the strongest of the train 　　Arise to throw; the strongest throws in vain." 　　 　　She spoke: and momentary mounts the sky: 　　The friendly voice Ulysses hears with joy. 　　Then thus aloud (elate with decent pride) 　　"Rise, ye Phaecians, try your force (he cried): 　　If with this throw the strongest caster vie, 　　Still, further still, I bid the discus fly. 　　Stand forth, ye champions, who the gauntlet wield, 　　Or ye, the swiftest racers of the field!
