  魚即鰳魚,主産於我國沿海,如黃海、東海等,屬近海中上層魚類。我國北方習慣稱之為“膾魚”、“白鱗魚”。魚身一般長約40釐米左右,銀白色、體側扁,以食魚類和無脊椎動物為主。春季至初夏由外海遊至近海産卵後的魚,正如産卵前的鰣魚一樣,其肉質正是最為鮮美之時,兩者堪以媲美。故民間素有“來時鰣、去時鰣”之說。
  不僅如此,人們之所以對魚青睞有加、又習慣稱鰳魚為魚,相傳是在2500多年前(即公元前505年)的吳王闔閭時期,當時的東海之中有若幹沙洲被夷人侵占,是年夷兵進犯吳境,吳王闔閭親自點兵出徵,夷人聞之喪膽而收兵逃竄,吳王乘勝追擊至東海,與夷兵各據沙洲一隅彼此對峙,相持近月而不得勝,此時忽起風暴,海上糧草無法補充,相峙兩軍均受風沙斷糧之苦。吳王於是焚香祈天,祈禱方罷,便見東風大起、海上粼粼銀波滾滾而來、環繞吳軍四周,令人詫異。吳王命士兵撈起,卻是銀色鮮魚即鰳魚,於是三軍饑勞頓解:而夷兵則片鱗無獲,因而大敗。吳軍得勝回朝,闔閭與群臣相見,敘述敗夷之奇遇、回想海魚之美味,即問手下“東海所餘之魚何在?”回稟:“餘者曝幹載歸”。吳王再嘗,方知幹魚之美猶勝鮮魚。故稱為“”,即美味之魚。後俗寫為“”,亦泛指為曝曬之幹魚。宋範成大《吳郡志*雜志》載“因書美下着魚,是為字”;《正字通》中亦稱“,本為俗寫”。現《辭海》、〈現代漢語典〉等書中亦都有所敘述。
