University Settlement is a multi-service agency that was founded in 1910 and has the distinction of being the first community-based social service centre in the City of Toronto. Located in the heart of downtown Toronto and bordering on the revitalized Grange Park, University Settlement is part of a culturally rich and vibrant neighbourhood. As an active member of this diverse community, University Settlement strives to meet the social, economic, and cultural needs of its neighbours and users through its many programs and services.
JOB FUNCTION:
To coordinate and deliver newcomer settlement services at our downtown Toronto office
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Degree in Social Work/Social Sciences or College Diploma in Social Services with at least 2 years experience working with newcomers towards their adaptation process
• An understanding and knowledge of issues facing newcomers such as diversity, adaptation, employment, family stressors, social integration, substance abuse, racism and harassment
• Familiar with casework process, including intake procedures, referrals, case management and follow-ups
• Knowledge and skills of facilitating groups, e.g., self-help groups and providing support services
• Familiar with immigration, settlement and social services in the City of Toronto and experienced in working with community organizations
• Experienced in working in multicultural setting with staff, clients and volunteers who are from different ethno-racial backgrounds
• Good verbal and written communication skills in English
• Fluency in Mandarin and Cantonese is required
• Conflict resolution and conflict de-escalation skills
• Strong computer skills with knowledge of Windows, MS Office and Internet
• Willingness to work flexible schedules, including evenings and occasionally weekends
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Conduct intake interviews to assess client’s presenting and underlying needs and issues related to their adaptation,
• Provide case management services to newcomers
• Recruit, train and supervise volunteers
• Make appropriate referrals, both internally and externally
• Provide direct services such as form filling, translation and interpretation
• Follow-up on client’s progress, within reasonable timeframe, and take steps whenever necessary to ensure their adaptation needs are met,
• Work with other staff and volunteers as a team to ensure services are delivered seamlessly and professionally
• Plan, organize and conduct regular workshops to newcomer clients to familiarize them about various aspects of the Canadian society
• Plan, establish and run social work groups to deliver services to targeted groups of newcomer clients, i.e., women, youth, seniors and families to achieve specific goals
• Maintain accurate intake/casework and group work recording, monthly statistical records and reports
• Participate in community meetings to share information, identify shared concerns, articulate client’s needs and establish services collaborations
• Participate in regular agency’s departmental meetings to maximize service coordination among departments
• Attend regular supervision meetings and advise management on most recent social trends that impact newcomers
• Participate in the planning, preparation and facilitation of University Settlement community events
• Other duties as assigned by Director, Settlement & Social Services
SALARY RANGE: $19.23 per hour
SCHEDULE: Full-time Position, 35 hours per week
