非马本名馬為義，一九三六年生於臺灣臺中市，在原籍廣東潮陽度過童年。臺北工專畢業，美國馬開大學機械碩士，威斯康辛大學核工博士。在美國阿岡國傢研究所從事能源研究工作多年，現已退休，專心寫作及繪畫。
六十年代開始寫詩。曾任美國伊利諾州詩人協會會長。為芝加哥詩人俱樂部會員，臺灣笠詩社衕仁，北美楓、北京新詩歌社、漢詩世界、新大陸詩刊、芝加哥華文寫作協會、東方雜誌及北美中華新文藝學會、美國華文文藝界協會等顧問，新詩界編委、北美中華藝術傢協會創會理事及國際華文詩人筆會主席團委員等。着有詩集十四種（包括英文詩集一種)，散文一種及譯着多種。作品被譯成多種文字，包括英文、日文、韓文、馬來西亞文、德文、斯拉夫文、希伯萊文、西班牙文及羅馬尼亞文等。主編《朦朧詩選》及《臺灣現代詩選》等多種。曾獲『吳濁流文學新詩奬』、『笠詩創作奬』、『笠詩繙譯奬』、『伊利諾州詩賽奬』及芝加哥『詩人與贊助者詩奬』等。在芝加哥舉行多次藝術個展及合展。
Under the pseudonym of Fei Ma, he is widely considered one of the world's best contemporary poets writing in Chinese. His poetry has enjoyed wide readership in Taiwan, Southeast Asia, mainland China, and in the United States. He is the author of fourteen volumes of poetry (all written in Chinese except Autumn Window which is in English) and a book of essays. He has translated the works of many contemporary American and European poets into Chinese and has received numerous awards, including three from Taiwan for his poetry and translations. Some of his poems have been translated into Japanese, Korean, Malaysian, Hebrew, German, Spanish, Slavic and Romanian, and have appeared in over one hundred anthologies. He has also edited and published several anthologies of contemporary Chinese and Taiwanese poetry. He is a past president of the Illinois State Poetry Society, a member of Chicago Poets' Club, and a member of the Advisory Board of the journal of North American Maple.
Besides his writing and translation work, he has also actively pursued other artistic endeavors such as oil painting and sculpture. He has held several solo and group art exhibitions in Chicago since 1994.
